As Fergie said, big girls don’t cry - unless it’s for science! 🔬 “You can see as my tear dries up, a beautiful frozen landscape is created ❄️ remember how salty tears are? When water evaporates, salt crystals are formed! Not only do we shed tears when experiencing emotions, but tears are also released every time we blink. While emotional tears indicate distress between individuals from certain animal species, they serve additional functions beyond emotional expression! Tears consist mainly of water, providing hydration to the eye, aiding in clear vision by focusing light, and facilitating the dispersion of electrolytes, proteins, lipids, and mucins. Electrolytes, such as sodium, chloride, calcium, and potassium are important for maintaining pH stability and normal osmotic pressure (they also create beautiful crystalline patterns on the microscope slide when water evaporates). Lots of different proteins are present: some are antimicrobial, some are enzymes that help breakdown lipids and other proteins and some are involved in wound healing and inflammation regulation. Lipids can also be found in tears! Can you see some small oily droplets floating around? These lipids include cholesterol, triglycerides, and phospholipids, and they prevent water from evaporating too quickly.” 📸: @tardibabe 🔬: Olympus BX53 . . . #EvidentLifeScience #Evident #Olympus #Microscopy #Microscope #Micro #Microscopic #MicroscopicWorld #LifeScience #Biology #Microscopes #Nature #Science #Scientists #MicroscopeImages #Research #Optics #Imaging #Objective #Sciart #MicroWorld

We think its time to start charging face mites rent 👀 "Did you know that less than 10% of the cells from our bodies are actually our own? Not only do we shelter billions of bacteria and yeasts but also tiny mites… Yes yes! You read well, there are microscopic animals crawling on your skin, especially on your face. 😂 After 8 hours of sampling mine, I finally found this cutie in my left eyebrow! It kinda looks like a water bear with a beaver tail, don’t you think? There are two species of Demodex found on humans: Demodex folliculorum, which lives in hair follicules, and Demodex brevis, which prefers the comfort of sebaceous glands. Demodex, also called face mites, eyelash mites or skin mites, usually measure from 0.2 mm to 0.4 mm in length, making them invisible to the naked eye. Like most monsters, they wait until nightfall to get out of their caves (AKA yo face) to crawl, copulate and munch on skin cells, oils and hormones. SURPRISE THOUGH, face mites don’t possess an anus, so when their life cycle is over and they die, after two weeks of existence, everything gets back on your face! Wee! I can hear you scream from afar: ‘’But tardi, are face mites dangerous???’’. The answer’s no! Well, in most cases… You see, if your immune system is working normally then you should already feel safer. It really is when the density of mites on your face is too high that they can cause problems. That being said, there are safe treatment options!" 📸: @tardibabe 🔬: Olympus BX53 #evidentlifescience #evident #olympus #microscopy #microscope #micro #microscopic #microscopicworld #lifescience #biology #microscopes #nature #science #scientists #microscopeimages #research #optics #imaging #objective #sciart #microworld

Ever wonder what the surface of a painting looks like under a microscope?    Brianna Weakley, #CMAConservation’s graduate intern in paintings conservation, is examining Abraham Hondius’s The Monkey and the Cat (1979.82)! Thanks to generous funding from the Lubrizol Corporation in 2014, the Paintings Conservation Lab has an automated Leica M205A microscope and Leica DMC5400 camera mounted to a custom anti-vibration, automated gantry system, engineered in collaboration with Parker Hannifin Corporation. This microscope produces high-resolution digital images enabling CMA conservators to document the surface of a painting. Following a full examination, Brianna will carry out the treatment on the painting; stay tuned for updates about this exciting painting!    #CMAConservation #conservation #paintingconservation #painting #hondius #dutch #dutchpaintings #dutchpictures #science #cats #microscopes #scienceandart #art

What do you get when you mix yeast, green algae and blood? 🩸🫣 "To simulate an infection, I added yeasts and green algae to a drop of my blood 🦠🩸 Instantly, white blood cells (most probably macrophages and neutrophils) were attracted by the fake pathogens I introduced them! Like little amoebas, they crawled up to foreign organisms before eating and digesting them, a process called phagocytosis. This way, the danger is neutralized and won’t be able to hurt you! The role of your immune system is to protect you against a wide array of pathogens like viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites like worms or protozoa. It seems pretty straightforward like this but it’s a bit more complicated than this! There are two different types of immune responses against invading microbes: the innate response and the adaptative response. They both work together to eliminate a threat but are very different responses. In this video, you can observe the innate response, also called natural response, in action! This response is the body’s first line of defense against pathogen and is rapid and non-specific. This means it can recognize a wide range of pathogens that share common features and uses phagocytic cells like neutrophils and macrophages to destroy them. If you get bitten by an insect, macrophages and neutrophils will run at the crime scene and neutralize toxins or pathogens, if some got in. If there’s an infection and pathogens couldn’t be destroyed by macrophages and neutrophils, lymphocytes come along to the party!" 📸: @tardibabe 🔬: Olympus BX53 . . . #EvidentLifeScience #Evident #Olympus #Microscopy #Microscope #Micro #Microscopic #Microscopicworld #LifeScience #Biology #Microscopes #Nature #Science #Scientists #MicroscopeImages #Research #Optics #Imaging #Objective #Sciart #Microworld

#TardibabeTakeover day 6️⃣ These cuties are among my favorite tardigrades; Hypsibius sp. 😄 I keep a culture at home and they’re starting to make babies, you can see a couple ones in this video! The word tardigrade was chosen by an Italian biologist, and it literally means “slow steppers” in Latin which is pretty funny because some of them are pretty fast on their 8 feet in my opinion! Tardigrades, also called water bears or moss-piglets, are without a doubt the international super stars of the micro world. They’re mostly famous because they evolved and adapted to survive extreme environmental conditions that are generally a death sentence to other animals. Among these adaptations we find resisting dehydration by forming a quiescent tun, resisting sub-zero temperatures down to -196 °C in their hydrated form and temperatures from -273°C to 100°C in their dehydrated form. They’re also able to survive enormous amount of radiations, high pressures, low oxygen concentrations and even exposure to the vacuum of space. It has been shown that water bears are among the most radiation-tolerant animals on this planet! All of these adaptations allowed Tardigrades to inhabit every microenvironment on Earth; from Arctic to Antarctic, deserts to tundra, mountains and forests, grasslands and valleys, ponds and lakes, they can even be found in the deep sea and most likely in your own garden! Since they usually measure between 50 microns to 1,2 millimeters, using a microscope to observe those from your garden will be necessary 😊 Can you spot the bubble-like structures moving around the water bear’s body? 📸: @tardibabe 🔬: Olympus BX53 References: Nelson, D.
