LEMicrotonal shimmer study! This piece makes use of the diesis (1\31) as the shimmer step of 31. Shimmer chords are chords who have these shimmer steps added to one or more of their chord tones. Here I use * to indicate a rising diesis followed by the degree of the chord which gets the shimmer, and ‘ to indicated a falling diesis, also followed by the degree which receives the shimmer. The piece concludes with an exploration in shimmer depth - the higher the EDO the more granular and fine the audible effect becomes. We can cycle from a 99 note tuning system which sounds like a smooth and subtle chorus pedal, all the way down to a 24 note tuning system whose shimmer is much more pronounced and turbulent. This new compositional tool opens up a lot of possibilities!

FRThis is part of a new piece of mine, called “Ides of March”, which is on my new album of original fretless guitar music, out now.
Playing notes approximately a quarter-step apart (50 cents) or 3/4 step apart (150 cents) can be a very expressive use of microtones. In Western musical temperment each note (C C# D etc.) is 100 cents apart, with 12 notes per octave (the chromatic scale). The acronym for this is 12TET. Having notes 50 cents apart, and 24 notes per octave, is part of traditional Arabic temperment, and is referred to as 24TET. Of course, one could divide the octave into as many notes of equal temperment divisions as one wants. The challenge always is how to use these notes musically as it is easy to let the theory supersede musicality.

This IS dense, but serves as a thumbnail overview. Beginners might watch it several times, starting with text descriptions and then focusing on experiencing each chord with the spectrum analyzer, or vice versa.
I began my own tuning theory journey with this exact scale, and internalizing its logic goes a long way to understanding many other tuning concepts and temperaments, like 1/4 comma meantone, which are designed precisely to address the issues we meet here.
From a composition perspective, the special considerations with JI are very manageable, though it's best to understand it works and plan your piece in it from the outset.
Music that was not written with JI in mind, however, often can't be adapted to it. When people say that JI is unusable, I suspect they tried to shove a piece by Mozart or Bach into it and found it didn’t work. That doesn’t mean the tuning isn’t usable – it just means Mozart and Bach weren’t using it.
