Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex 👀 (D-MER) The reason I had to breathe deeply and focus on emptying my mind during every let down for the first four months of breastfeeding. And turn off all sounds, ask my husband to quietly remove the dogs from my space while I asked God to be near. Two minutes later I would be totally fine. Short version - hormones released during let down cause an intense feeling of melancholy and general hopelessness. Not for every woman! But for many. It is alarming, disarming, and cause for a lot of women to simply stop breastfeeding altogether. It is scary when you don’t know what it is, which is why knowledge is powerful! I think more obstetrical professionals and lactation professionals (though that’s where I get the majority of my info from so it’s coming along…) should talk more about D-MER or Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex. Because thinking you’re alone while you’re feeling absolutely awful while breastfeeding your brand new baby when society tells you it’s natural and you’re gonna love it could be so isolating and really detrimental on a new moms postpartum mental health. **for informational purposes only** #dmer #breastfeedingjourney #breastfeedingissues #breastfeedingtips #babyfeeding #postpartumjourney

D-MER: dysphoric milk ejection reflex. What it IS: a chemical imbalance triggered by the let down reflex resulting in uncomfortable feelings and overwhelming sadness. It can feel like: depression, sorrow, anxiety, homesickness, dreadfulness, tingling, disgust, anger, dizziness. What it is NOT: postpartum depression or any psychological mood disorder or a breastfeeding aversion. Women who struggle with DMER cope with it in different ways, so this is just my experience. Learning about it around month 4 of nursing helped bring so much relief for me. Though I still struggled with it for about 8 months total, I was able to practice breathing techniques and positive visualization to combat it. I’m so grateful I was able to nurse James as long as I did because I had the knowledge to make it a positive experience, despite the hardships. . #breastfeedingstruggles #dmer #breastfeeding #breastfeedingmom #extendedbreastfeeding #nursingtips #breastfeedingtips #breastfeedingawareness #bfmom

Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex aka D-MER 😔 This effects some breastfeeding women, and causes a very negative emotional response when they begin their milk let down. For me it makes me sick to my stomach, I feel dread, impending doom and disgust. For no reason. It only last a few minutes, but It’s AWFUL😓 if you experience DMER, I see you and I’m sorry🩵 #breastfeedingmom #dysphoricmilkejectionreflex #nursingmom #momproblems #momsofinstagram #pumpingmom

I have since learned that the anxiety I feel while pumping is called Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex (D-MER) and only about 5% of lactating women get it. It’s wild what our bodies go through. So thankful for the community I have on here that taught me that otherwise I would have just thought my body was, “off” or weird or just felt like I was alone on that. #PostpartumConfessions ep3 is LIVE! #postpartum #confession #motherhood #anjelahjohnson

Dysphoric milk ejection reflex (D-MER), is a very poorly understood and practically unstudied phenomenon that involves brief negative feelings just before milk release and for a few minutes afterwards. The negative feelings range in severity from “wistfulness to self-loathing” according to one of the very few case reports published on this subject. The onset and duration of D-MER is highly variable but most of the women reported dysphoria or anxiety regardless of the cause of milk release and complete remission of these symptoms only after they stopped breastfeeding. The women did not have symptoms consistent with postpartum depression, denied low moods outside of breastfeeding and reported being able to bond with their babies. It’s too early to tell how oxytocin is involved in this particular phenomenon but it’s another example that hormones aren’t all good or bad but work in complex ways as part of larger circuits in our brains. . . . #dmer #breastfeeding #maternalmentalhealth #maternalmentalhealthawareness #Mentalhealth #wellness #health #wellbeing #pregnancyhealth #postpartum #womenphysicians #psychiatry #fourthtrimester #mindfulness #perinatalmoodandanxiety #postpartumjourney #saludmental #saludmentalmaterna #saludmentaldelamujer #mentalhealthmatters #womensmentalhealth #reproductivepsychiatry #sarahoreckmd

✨ Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex ✨ D-MER is very different from postpartum depression and anxiety. D-MER is associated with negative emotions only while having a milk let down. Common feelings of DMER: Hollow feeling in stomach Anxiety Sadness Dread Nervousness Anxiousness Emotional upset Irritability Hopelessness Nausea Symptoms can vary from mild to severe and begin to decrease closer to 12 weeks postpartum. Understanding this condition is triggered by a hormonal response can be helpful in understanding symptoms. Distraction for the first few minutes of breastfeeding could also help you cope with symptoms. Avoiding dehydration and caffeine can prevent worsening of symptoms. ✨Do you have DMER?
