Alan Watts (January 6, 1915 – November 16, 1973) was a renowned British philosopher, writer, speaker, and popularizer of Eastern philosophy for Western audiences. Born in Chislehurst, England, Watts developed a deep interest in Eastern thought and spirituality at an early age. He moved to the United States in 1938, eventually becoming one of the most influential figures in the 1960s countercultural movement.
Watts authored over 25 books and delivered countless public lectures, famously introducing ideas from Zen Buddhism, Taoism, and Hinduism to a Western audience. Among his most notable works are "The Way of Zen," "The Wisdom of Insecurity," and "The Book: On the Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are." His engaging speaking style and ability to clearly articulate complex philosophical ideas made him highly popular during his lifetime and beyond.

DEIn Deep Meditation, The Mind Is Turned Inwards -
Katha Upaniṣad (2.1.1): “The Self-born turned the senses outward; thus we look outside. Rare is the wise who turns within and sees the Self.”
In Sanskrit terms:
In Vedānta/Yoga, the “mind” is the antaḥkaraṇa (inner instrument):
Manas (thinking, sensing), buddhi (discrimination), ahamkāra (I-maker), chitta (memory/imprints).
When turned outward, it pursues objects. When turned inward, it rests the senses (pratyāhāra), gathers attention (dhāraṇā), becomes unbroken flow (dhyāna), and finally settles into its source (samādhi).
Yoga Sūtra I.2–3: “Yoga is the stilling of mind-fluctuations; then the Seer abides in its own nature.”
Key shift: The object of attention moves
from outer sights/sounds → inner thoughts/images → the very fact of awareness itself.
As outward grasping quiets, subject–object tension thins; clarity, ease, and a quiet joy (ānanda) appear.
How it works
Prāṇa follows attention. Scattered attention = scattered prāṇa.
With steady breath and pratyāhāra, prāṇa consolidates in the suṣumnā (central channel). Ida/Piṅgalā (left/right currents) balance; mind grows lucid (sāttvic).
Old impressions (saṃskāras) surface and release without you “taking the bait.” This is purification.
