It has been 12 years since conversations began about the need for an Indigenous Gathering Place in Moh’kinsstis. Twelve years of planning, advocacy, and relationship-building within systems not designed for Indigenous ways of knowing or moving at the pace our communities need. We have been patient. We have done the work the right way. But it has been too long. Our Elders’ vision for a permanent, Indigenous-led Gathering Place is clear and unchanged. What must change is the pace. The Indigenous Gathering Place Society remains steady in carrying this vision forward. We are calling for expediency, accountability, and action. Now is the time to move from discussion to delivery. Stand with us. Share our story. Help move this work forward.

For almost a decade, the world’s freshwater laboratory has been building relationships with local First Nations communities and working to understand their concerns and needs. Our activities with our neighbours in Treaty 3 communities involve collaboration and communication in areas of common interest, including the environmental impacts of resource development, education, youth engagement, and traditional ecological knowledge. Giniw’ikwe/Laura Horton of Rainy River First Nation/Tulita offers us her perspective.

What a powerful day it was at Province House yesterday. All kinds of people travelled from all over this part of Mi’kma’ki, including Mi’kmaq land and water defenders, to bring together our voices to speak up for Treaty Rights, environment and democracy. We shouted at the pillars of the Legislature Building, and made our voices heard while Tim Houston’s government attempted a productive work day. We listened to several moving speakers share their emotion-filled words of wisdom, we prayed together, we sang together, and we danced together. We heard from critics and NDP members, who offered their support and thanked us for our presence. We want a government that respects Treaty Rights and upholds their own treaty responsibilities. We want a government that believes in and respects democracy - one with a leader who will not flee to another province when they have the opportunity to listen to the people they represent. 📣 We made our voices and our demands loud and clear - we won’t give up, we won’t back down. 📣 Thank you to everyone who came out to shout & support. We are louder, and more powerful together! #SaveOurOldForests #WeAreAllTreatyPeople #ProtectNovaScotiaDemocracy

An entire year in review... 💚 We pledge to be transparent in our governance, responsible in our use of resources, and thoughtful in our growth. As NAHEM expands across regions and partnerships, we will remain rooted in principles of stewardship and reciprocity, ensuring that growth never comes at the expense of cultural integrity, community consent, or care. 💚 Our leadership is guided by Indigenous values, including Eastern Woodland teachings that emphasize relational responsibility, collective care, and decision-making that considers the impact on future generations. We understand leadership not as individual authority, but as service to the people, accountability to community, and responsibility to those who come after US. 💚 We commit to honoring Traditional Ecological Knowledge, cultural practices, and Indigenous ways of knowing as living systems. These teachings remind us that education, health, mentorship, and workforce development are interconnected and must be approached holistically, with respect for land, water, language, and community balance. Be part of this movement: • Volunteer: Join our grant writing, social media, and event teams. • Engage: Join the Seed Library mailing list (3 free seed types). • Donate: Every $50 sustains Indigenous futures. • Follow: @nahemservices | nahemservices.org #indigenousknowledge #nonprofit #501 #NAHEM sustainable nativeorg indigenous education bayarea seattle volunteer
