Measuring up to 60 feet long, its massive jaws and serrated teeth were designed to crush bones and hunt large prey, including whales. A true apex predator, Megalodon represents the peak of ancient marine power and mystery. 🌊 Messapicetus An ancient, dolphin-like whale from the Miocene epoch, Messapicetus glided through oceans 7-11 million years ago. With elongated jaws and sharp teeth, it hunted fish and squid, showcasing the elegance and power of early marine mammals. 🐾 Allodesmus A powerful pinniped from the Miocene epoch, Allodesmus roamed coastal waters around 15-10 million years ago. Resembling modern sea lions, it had strong swimming adaptations and likely lived in large colonies. Fossils suggest Allodesmus may have been an adept diver, preying on fish and squid in the depths, marking it as an early marine mammal success story. 🦈 Livyatan Named after the biblical Leviathan, this monstrous Miocene predator rivaled the size of sperm whales today. At Ashfall we see the remains of around 70 individual animals who died around 10 million years ago. Perfectly preserved does not even begin to cover the magnitude of how exquisite this site is. Horses, camels and of course rhinos all laying together exactly as they died so long ago and telling the story of a very dark day in Midwestern North America. Some of the best preserved specimens of Teleoceras in the world can be found at this site.
