If we continue dating, you have to know that is the reality of being a widow.” Dating a widow isn’t easy. Falling in love with one is even more complicated. It takes so much patience and understanding to be vulnerable enough to fall in love with someone who also is in love with someone else who is not physically here. It takes a certain type of person to fall in love with someone who had an entire life and future planned before you—one that she loved and cherished and one that she didn’t want to give up, but was forced to because of life’s circumstances. It takes a true man to be strong enough to walk into a home that was once shared with the person you’re with and another man and see the needs and undertake them without question. To build a relationship with children that aren’t yours and treat them like your own. It takes a certain type of person to not feel threatened or intimidated by the legacy and memory of a man who once shared a life with the person you love. It takes a true gentleman to hug and comfort a widow when she is crying about the man she lost and all the trauma and grief she has had to endure and not feel slighted. It takes a certain person to not see a widow as a broken person, but to rather see her for the woman she is, in her strength and also as a person who will forever be healing. I want to show some immense gratitude to the man that continues to show up for me and my boys when it’s hard and messy.
