Some teachings sound biblical until you look closer. Ancient heresy of modalism is a view that denies the distinct persons of the Trinity. Once taught by Sabellius in the 3rd century, modalism claims God simply appeared in different “modes” as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Though rejected by the early Church, this distorted theology still shows up today in modern groups. It is crucial to know what we believe and why. It’s not just history, it’s truth that protects our faith. 👉 Want to dig deeper into biblical clarity and uncover more hidden church history? Modalism also known as Sabellianism or Oneness theology is a heretical view of the Trinity that denies the distinct persons of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Instead it teaches that God is one person who reveals Himself in three different "modes" or "manifestations" at different times. For example God is said to manifest as the Father in creation, as the Son in redemption, and as the Holy Spirit in sanctification but these are not distinct persons, just different roles or forms of the same singular person. This view was condemned as heresy by the early church because it contradicts the clear teaching of Scripture regarding the tri-personal nature of God. Why Modalism is Theologically Problematic? 1. Undermines the Doctrine of the Incarnation If Jesus is merely a "mode" of God, it undermines the reality of the incarnation. The Bible teaches that the Son is fully God and fully man (John 1:14). Modalism makes it impossible for the Son to relate to the Father or for Jesus to act as a mediator (1 Timothy 2:5). 2. Destroys the Concept of Relationship Within the Trinity Scripture reveals the Trinity as a loving, eternal relationship between the Father, Son, and Spirit (John 17:24). Modalism denies these relationships and reduces God to a single person playing different roles, which is not supported by Scripture. 3. Contradicts the Atonement The Bible teaches that Jesus offered Himself to the Father as a sacrifice for sin (Hebrews 9:14). Modalism makes this meaningless because it would mean Jesus offered Himself to Himself.

Oneness Pentecostals teach a theology that leans into modalism. But historic Christianity has always held to the Trinity: one eternal God in three distinct Persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. • Matthew 28:19 – ‘Baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit’ • John 1:1 & 14 – ‘The Word was with God and was God… and the Word became flesh’ • 2 Corinthians 13:14 – ‘The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all’ Denying the Trinity is literal heresy (Galatians 1:8), and no—tongues aren’t required for salvation (Romans 10:9, Ephesians 2:8-9). #JesusChrist #FYPシ #GenZForJesus #Protestant #ReformedChristian #TrinityTruth #bibleverses #reformed #reformedchristian

The Trinity is not a cute analogy you can wrap up with water, ice, and steam and call it a day. God is not one thing that changes costumes depending on temperature. That analogy collapses straight into modalism, the idea that God is one Person wearing three masks, and Christianity rejected that almost immediately because Scripture itself doesn’t allow it. The Father is not the Son, the Son is not the Spirit, and yet all three are fully and eternally God, not parts, not modes, not fractions, but one divine essence shared by three distinct Persons. That’s why Jesus prays to the Father, why the Father speaks over the Son, why the Spirit descends, and why none of that makes sense if God is just switching forms like Pokémon. The Trinity is revealed, not invented, and it stretches the mind because God is not confined to human categories. If you can fully explain God with a middle school science analogy, you’re no longer talking about the God of Scripture. Christianity has always held that God is one in being and three in Person, co-eternal, co-equal, uncreated, and inseparable in essence, even though they act distinctly in salvation history. The Father sends, the Son is sent, the Spirit proceeds, and yet all act as one because God is one. Mystery does not mean nonsense, it means reality that exceeds us. The moment we demand God be simple enough to fit our comfort level, we stop worshiping Him and start resizing Him. The Trinity isn’t something you master, it’s something you submit to, because if God were small enough to be easily explained, He wouldn’t be God at all.

Shield of the Trinity + mystery proves it’s logical? 🤯 All analogies to describe the Triune God fail to partialism or modalism. This proves that three persons who are the same being is logically impossible. Moreover, while not all things about God are known, some things are (like who and what He is), and mystery is not positive evidence, nor can it be falsified, or explain away contradictions. @jesusandwhatnot

O, Patrick… Modalism is an ancient heresy that arose in the 2nd and 3rd centuries, which denies the distinct persons of the Trinity by asserting that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are three “modes” or “expressions” of the one person of God, who reveals Himself in these different “expressions” at different times. Sabellius (3rd century), who gave rise to “Sabellianism” as a subset of Modalism, claimed that God is one person who reveals himself in three forms or roles, successively rather than simultaneously. (God is the Father in creation, God is the Son in redemption, and God is the Holy Spirit in the church age for sanctification and guidance.) Based upon the refutations of the church fathers, Sabellius used analogies to explain his view, such as comparing God to the sun, which has light, heat, and form, but is still one entity. Or how H20 can have three expressions. Modalism was officially condemned as heresy by the early 3rd century. Robert Letham states, “Modalism involves the blurring or erasing of the real, eternal, and irreducible distinctions between the three persons of the Trinity. This danger can arise when the unity of God, or the identity in being of the three, is overstated at the expense of the personal distinctions. It can also surface where there is a pervasive stress on salvation history, so as to eliminate any reference to eternal realities. When that is so, God’s revelation in human history as the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit is no longer held to reveal who He is eternally in Himself.” In other words, Modalism asserts that the way in which God reveals Himself in history is not true of who He is eternally because the “modes” or “expressions” are temporary and functional rather than reflecting the eternal of God. This renders us incapable of truly knowing Him. Other popular Modalists include T.D. Jakes and Steven Furtick.
