DRIf you want to have a better relationship with your child or teen, it is so important we move away from punishment-based parenting.
It's important we move away from instilling fear to correct behavior.
What is punishment?
Punishment is based on pain, discomfort, and fear to decrease a behavior.
Although it might appear effective, it often leads to long-term harmful consequences.
The punishment the child/teen is subjected to causes them to focus on the discomfort of the punishment (scrubbing the kitchen floors)...
...but doesn’t help them make any connection between their behavior and the punishment (I'm scrubbing the floors for lying about my homework).
In the future...
• the punishment loses its power (they don’t care about losing their screen time)
• they forget why they lost it and blame the one who is doing the punishment (“mom sucks for taking away my screens”)
• it leads to more negative behavior (they continue to lie or hide the lying behavior).
Let's do things differently.
