When a venomous Cape cobra enters meerkat territory, it doesn’t just face one puffball—it faces an entire mob.

Meerkats (Suricata suricatta) are small mongooses, only about 25–35 cm long, but they defend their burrows and pups with serious courage. They use:
Alarm calls to warn the group
Coordinated mobbing to confuse and intimidate snakes
Quick side-jumps and dust kicks to dodge strikes
They’re not totally immune to venom, but like many mongooses they have some resistance—enough that a single bite isn’t always fatal, but still very dangerous.
Meerkats are listed as Least Concern, but they’re vulnerable to habitat loss, extreme drought, and disease. Healthy Kalahari and savanna ecosystems keep both predators and prey in balance.
