A psychologist in the 1950s named Harry Harlow separated infant monkeys from their mothers at birth. He placed them in cages with two artificial “mothers”:
. One was made of hard wire but provided milk.
· The other was made of soft cloth but provided no food.
The baby monkeys consistently clung to the cloth mother for comfort and security, only going to the wire mother when hungry. When scared, they ran directly to the cloth mother.
Harlow proved that comfort and security (contact comfort) are more essential to the mother-infant bond than food alone. This revolutionized psychology by showing that love and affection are critical for healthy development.
