Fun fact: Dragon Ball Z (1989–1996) While the series is a sci-fi action epic, its foundations are actually ancient. Akira Toriyama originally modeled the story and characters on the 16th-century Chinese novel Journey to the West, with Goku being a direct reimagining of the Monkey King, Sun Wukong.
The series centers on the powerful Saiyan warrior Goku as he and the Z-Fighters defend Earth against increasingly powerful galactic threats, ranging from ruthless tyrants like Frieza to biological terrors like Cell.
Interestingly, Toriyama created the villain Frieza—who forcibly seizes and resells planets—as a metaphor for real estate speculators, whom he considered the “worst kind of people” during the Japanese economic bubble of the late 1980s.
