Morphos have a very distinctive, slow, bouncy flight pattern due to their wing area being enormous relative to their body size. Many of the Morpho species are metallic shimmery shades of blue and it is thought that the flash of the iridescent blue to their dark underside confuses predators when in flight. . Males are most frequently encountered along rivers and streams running through the jungle. They are quite belligerent and will actively chase away any large butterflies which may happen to invade its territory. Spending much of the late morning and afternoon patrolling their home ranges in search of females. . What can we learn from the morpho butterfly about creating color with less chemicals? Most of the pigments or paint we use in our designs and creations often require toxic additives and binders. In contrast, organisms in nature (birds, beetles, butterflies to name a few) have creative ways to create color using structure alone— and even have more than one ~function~ (such as repelling bacteria or protecting from UV damage). The structure of the morpho butterfly’s wings includes layers of scales that each have a nano-topography of pillars and ridges. These formations cause incoming light waves to diffract — or spread out— and interfere with each other. Some of the wavelengths of light cancel out, which is called destructive interference, while other wavelengths enhance and reflect, called constructive interference. The shape and size of the pillars/ridges determines which wavelengths are canceled or enhanced. In the case of the Morpho, blue and purple wavelengths are reflected and give the butterfly its distinct look.
