Who knew that video clips of Morris Dancers would attract as much interest on social media as the Vikings (York’s annual flagship event) and Chinese Dragons of recent weekends. Thanks to the helpful folk of social media, I have learned that this weekend was the Inter Varsity Folk Dance Festival 2026 hosted by the Uni of York. Traditional folk dance troops from all over the country headed to York to the delight of onlookers. Watching and listening to them walk around town with bells on their boots/ hats/ outfits, was as much fun as the dancing itself. I took lots of short videos however the Coventry group outdid the rest by treating us to a full march right past our doorway. To answer other questions on the previous posts, there have been male, female and child morris dancers jingling along Petergate. Search for IVFDF 2026 and there’s lots of information available if you’re interested! Just another day in amazing York!

Some theories: 🔔 Medieval courtly entertainment 🔔 Ancient pagan rituals (probably not, but makes a good story!) 🔔 Moorish influences (hence "morris"?) 🔔 Rural village celebrations What we DO know: ✨ It's been bringing communities together for centuries ✨ Every region developed its own unique style ✨ It survived wars, plagues, and changing times ✨ It's still alive and thriving today From village greens to Trafalgar Square (where we'll finish this May), morris dancing has always been about joy, community, and keeping traditions alive.
