SEA frequent question I'm asked at events is 'Do you stuff moth bodies?' The answer is, generally speaking, a no. The only exception is female Atlas and Luna moths. For any other moth I do a degreasing bath. This breaks down the oils in the insects body, and prevents them seeping out over time. When that happens, the body goes dark and glossy. It flattens the tiny hairs and can spoil the fluffiness of the moth. And if you have a framed moth, you want it to stay good and fluffy!
You can degrease either before or after pinning, the acetone will not rehydrate the moths so it won't ruin how they're pinned.

🔻Scientific name: Attacus atlas
🔺Origin: Thailand, Asia
The Atlas moth is one of the largest moth species in the world, named after the Titan from Greek mythology. This species is well known for its immense wingspan and striking appearance.
On each of their wings, there are translucent "windows" which aids with camouflage. Additionally, they have patterns that resemble snake heads on the tips of their fore-wings which are thought to serve as a defence mechanism against predators. 🐍
The caterpillars are green and excrete a waxy, powdery coating, giving them the appearance of being dusted with icing sugar. Unlike most moth species, which shed their skin four times as larvae (excluding the final molt to pupation), Atlas moths go through five sheds, presumably to accommodate their immense growth as a large species. In captivity, they are very easy to rear on the leaves of garden privet. 🌿

I love moths and in Costa Rica I’m in moth heaven. That’s because there are around 12,000 different species here! Yes, 12,000. That’s more than all the species in the entire United States packed into a country 0.5% the size.
I found this cutie while black lighting in my backyard at @osaconservation. Of course we have an insane amount moths here on the Osa Peninsula. It’s all part of a bigger moth project I’m working on that I can’t wait to share.
