YAMotherhood doesn’t always look pretty, and having faith doesn’t mean you don’t struggle. This is what most days look like lately.
Yesterday when my mom was over and I was having another episode right after posting my rant and feeling strong and positive. She said “See this is the part that people don’t see. The real, and you’re not the only one. People just post and show all of the good.”
I just want to take just one of my rough moments and share it too so that you’re not alone girl. Take a deep breath, and repeat my prayer with me:
“God help me, strengthen me please.”
I’m not gonna lie. We had quite a few more episodes before getting out of the house. But it wasn’t a total breakdown I was able to hold my composure better.
I explained to my son that sometimes we just have really heavy feelings and we need to remember to breathe and ask God for help in those times.
-God really blessed me with him. Little did I know that he was going to be such an important support to helping me heal through postpartum this time around.

In 1986, giving birth cost $1,500-$2,000 and insurance covered most of it. Parents paid $200-$400 out of pocket.
There was no federal maternity leave law. But one income could support a family, so moms could afford to take unpaid time off.
47% of moms stayed home. 60% lived near extended family. Neighbors brought meals for weeks.
In 2026, having a baby costs $10,000-$15,000. Insurance covers less. Parents pay $3,000-$5,000 out of pocket.
Most families can’t afford unpaid leave anymore.
72% of moms work. Family lives states away. You’re on your own.
The cost went up. The support disappeared.
And moms are scrambling to hold it all together.

“If a child was drowning, you wouldn’t stand at the side of the pool shouting instructions.”
You wouldn’t say
“Kick harder.”
“Try to keep up.”
“Everyone else is managing.”
You wouldn’t send them back in tomorrow to build resilience.
You would pull them out.
You would wrap them in something warm.
You would hold them while their breathing steadied.
You would protect them from the thing that overwhelmed them in the first place.
And I just sat there.
Because suddenly… I could see it.
The school mornings where his shoulders were tight before we’d even left the driveway.
The way he’d explode after holding it together all day.
The headaches.
The stomach aches.
The “I’m fine” that never really meant fine.
The reports said he was coping.
That he was bright.
That he just needed to try harder socially.
That he struggled with flexibility.
But nobody was asking what it cost him to cope.
Nobody was asking what it felt like in his body
when the chairs scraped,
when the room got loud,
when the instructions changed without warning,
when he didn’t understand why the other children looked at him like that.
He wasn’t failing.
He was surviving.
And survival is not the same thing as thriving.
The day my therapist said,
“Laura, he’s not refusing to swim. He’s drowning,”
something in me broke.
Because I realised I had been standing at the side of the pool too.
Trusting the system.
Trusting that if he just tried harder, it would click.
But my job isn’t to make him stronger for an environment that’s breaking him.
My job is to notice when he can’t breathe.
So I pulled him out.
Not dramatically.
Not angrily.
Not to prove a point.
But because once you see your child as drowning…
you cannot, in good conscience, push them back under.
That day I chose his nervous system over attendance percentages.
His safety over other people’s opinions.
His future over their comfort.
And I have never regretted it.
Sometimes protecting your child doesn’t look brave from the outside.
It looks inconvenient.
It looks overprotective.
It looks like you’re giving up.
But sometimes…
it’s the first time they can breathe.
