It’s a really fun experiment that you may have done as a kid and not even known it! When boiling water is exposed to very subzero temperatures (as it was here at-30°F/-34°C), it can result in a fascinating phenomenon known as the Mpemba effect, where it actually freezes at a faster rate than cold water. 🤔🧐
I love running little experiments like this with my kids, so I couldn’t resist when the outside temperature conditions lined up perfectly, and the whole neighborhood’s kids came out!
To help understand:
When hot water is thrown into extremely cold air, it quickly evaporates and turns into vapor. This rapid evaporation removes heat from the water, causing it to cool down faster than a similar volume of cold water. As a result, the hot water may freeze more rapidly than the cold water, even though it started at a higher temperature.
Notably, several factors, including the initial temperatures, air conditions, and water purity, can influence whether the Mpemba effect is observed.
Fun fact:
The phenomenon is named after Tanzanian student Erasto Mpemba who observed it in the 1960s. The precise mechanisms behind this phenomenon are still not fully understood, and researchers continue to investigate the conditions under which it occurs today!
