📍LOS ANGELES, CA A Los Angeles police officer who fatally shot 14-year-old Valentina Orellana Peralta inside a North Hollywood department store testified Monday in a wrongful death lawsuit brought by her parents. Officer William Dorsey Jones Jr., armed with an AR-15 rifle, moved ahead of other officers inside a Burlington store while searching for an assault suspect and fired three shots. While the gunfire killed the suspect, one round ricocheted off the floor, pierced a drywall partition and struck Valentina, who was hiding in a dressing room with her mother, Soledad Peralta. She died in her mother’s arms. The family is suing Jones, the City of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Police Department for wrongful death and negligence. In 2024, the California Attorney General’s Office declined to file criminal charges, citing insufficient evidence to prove Jones did not act in lawful self-defense or defense of others. The Los Angeles Police Commission previously ruled that only Jones’ first shot was within policy, while the second and third were not, and then-Chief Michel Moore stated all three shots were unjustified. Jones remains employed by LAPD but has been removed from field duties. During testimony on April 13, Jones said he heard another officer yell “sling that” before the shooting and claimed he began moving his rifle into a sling-carry position, stating he was the only officer present with a weapon capable of being slung. I can’t tag @ sharona4bh but I wish she would make a comment about Beverly Hills police $500 million dollar racial profiling lawsuit before another fundraiser or GALA for them… I mean dozens of officers at this department make over half a million a year. Many officers had and may still have vehicle violations to their own vehicles they part at the station, then put their uniform on and put black people in jail for the same offenses they violate. I mean even black on duty LAPD officers claim they were racially profiled by Beverly Hills police. It’s insanity and the silence from @ lesterfriedman_bh (former Mayor of Beverly Hills) and the current Mayor is really disappointing. Why does it seem those who steal tax payers money and homeless peoples lives for their own financial gain are protected???? This is as sick and twisted as it gets and I want to know what these guys look like and see their photos. I also am happy to know these 2 arrests are just the beginning. This message goes out to anyone thinking about stealing from taxpayers or from the lives of homeless men and women to enrich themselves: learn from this. Don’t do it. Because now people are watching and justice is catching up. And if I were Tess Banko from the Veterans Collective or Steve Peck from U.S. Vets or Brian D’Andrea from Century Housing or Tyler Monroe from TSA Housing or Thomas Safran, I’d be paying attention right now. If I were New Directions, Concourse Federal or part of Brentwood School or UCLA or Village for Vets, the Home Key program, or LA County Supervisors and Military and Veterans Affairs or someone like Alan Trinh at the VA signing illegal and unethical EULs on federal deed-restricted Soldiers’ Homes, I’d be very concerned. Because every entity charging homeless or disabled veterans rent or profiting off the land meant to house them should be on notice. This is just the beginning and it’s about time. Now who remembers the golden shovel video? But really?
