Mudang are conduits for the spirits to speak through; some messages and insights come effortlessly as if through our own human mouths. Others are retrieved more clearly with the support of our mu-tools. People usually come with questions ranging from career to relationships to life transitions to health to personal obstacles to new year forecasting. The path of a 강신무 Kangshin-mu β€” which is the type of mudang I am β€” is only for those who have the calling. In Part 1, I explained how 신병 shinbyeong is the name for the condition brought on by the calling to become a mudang It’s a closed practice that only those who have the calling can potentially get access to. Even then, it’s only after they have successfully been initiated (yes, you can fail). Shinbyeong is the number one core requirement to be considered as a candidate for initiation μ‹ λ‚΄λ¦Ό as a mudang Many other traditions that loosely fall into this β€œshamanic” category will experience their calling similiar to how us mudang will experience shinbyeong Another core requirement, in my lineage specifically, is that you have Korean ancestry We don’t care about the color of your skin, your gender identity and expression, your sexual orientation, or that you can’t speak Korean (though you will learn some Korean as you learn more of the tradition) It doesn’t matter if you’re an adoptee, mixed, or part of the Korean diaspora in general (living outside the Korean Peninsula) You have the potential to initiate with us if you have the calling + Korean ancestry Now some other things that might factor in are: ✨Compatibility with the spirit parent to-be and the overall style of the lineage ✨The cost of the initiation ceremony, items and tools to get you started, as well as potential travel costs (this varies widely from lineage to lineage) ✨Your own willingness, or unwillingness, to accept the path So what about those who don’t have Korean ancestry, but have the calling to become a spiritual leader/priest/shaman etc.? For my lineage, we will steer them towards a lineage that is based in the ancestral roots of their ancestors We had some good conversations in Part 1. Let’s keep it going! I spent 3 weeks of my life making this poster, dreaming of being back in Korea because this whole thing is a little personal, because with every successful thing that makes Korean culture cool, I feel a pain in my heart for that Korean kid who grew up in western New York state where it was absolutely not cool to be Korean. What if K-pop Demon Hunters and the whole Hallyu movement existed when I was a kid? Maybe I wouldn't have gone to sleep wishing I'd wake up a white person, maybe i'd have been proud to be Korean. Well, I am proud now, and I made this poster and this 'lil reel to celebrate with ya'll. Sing it loud. The demon hunter through-line is shown as Rumi, Mira, and Zoey wear the traditional Mudang clothing with their modern hairstyles and footwear. Tradition meets modernity, shaman song and dance meets K-pop. I'm so happy for everyone who was involved in making the movie.
