This hallway has a story. And it started long before this house...
When I was little, I used to imagine my future. Not the details — just the feeling of it.
And at 25, as a Southern California girl wanting what I dreamed of, I felt unsettled and booked a solo trip to Dallas for no real reason. Like, this itch I couldn’t ignore. Wandering around the city, I walked into a Starbucks, sat next to a cute boy… and he’s my husband now.
Years later, we had grown our family to four boys in Virginia - a place we truly love - and I felt that same pull again. I need to go to Dallas. I booked a trip alone, my husband thought I was crazy.
And on that trip, driving through Dallas, I noticed a neighborhood lined with oak trees. Immediately, I was pulled in. The homes were majestic. I thought, maybe someday.
Then life kept moving. Until Dallas called us back. And this time, we listened. We left Virginia. Pushed our chips across the table. Bet on our forever. And the first place I went? Back to the oak trees.
A home in the back was available, and again, we pushed everything we had across the table to plant down roots. And somehow, it became ours.
When it came time to design this long hallway in a home that still sometimes makes me feel like an imposter, my designer @designbycambridge said: “Don’t just wallpaper it. Do it justice.” So, we went deeper.
Kandis showed me a mural. And out of all the artists in the world, the exact muralist, Marnie Vollenhals, lived nearby. We knew it had to be oak trees. And my gosh, did Marnie bring the vision to life!
Still, change is uncomfortable. For as beautiful as life is, we are finding our roots in a place that has yet to teach us many lessons. But, if one thing is for sure, I am certain this is where we are meant to be.
