Where do you think your dog sits? > Social > Tolerant > Selective > Aggressive > I know Gordo definitely sits between tolerant and selective with both humans and dogs, and all the training doesn’t prepare him for the dogs that come bowling on into his space and wow does it make me tired. 99% of our walks are amazing, he plays, ignores, engages and has a great time. Then there is that 1% moment that happens and it takes up so much space, energy, worry for me and him, fear of setbacks and more reinforcement that telling the dog to go away works or could escalate. Yes, this happened this morning… a lovely walk with my friends daughter and doggo, we saw a nervous greyhound ahead so moved up onto the bike track to give them space and keep moving past, and at the same time another big friendly dog came bowling in and stood over Gordo, to which he told it to go away and Bella yelped, and the Greyhound froze. It all happened in a matter of seconds, but for each dog they will now carry that moment with them and it will have different reinforcements for each. I can’t wait for my Muzzle to arrive as I know that definitely helps keep the friendly dogs and people at bay, even though 99.9% of the time he doesn’t need it. So for now… we will work, keep training and keep avoiding big black friendly dogs. 😞 Do I wish I had an overly friendly dog… nope, as I have learnt so much from having my tolerant/selective boy and honestly believe most dogs sit in this range. Everyone always assumes Magic "needs" a muzzle. She does not need a muzzle and only wears it for training and condition by purposes. She is a task trained service dog with public access, she lives with small animals, small children and overall is a very realizable and predicable dog. However, I have dealt with a lot of dogs in pain in the emergency room. Even the sweetest dogs in the world are capable of biting in high stress and high pain situations like an emergency. Too often, it's in those moments that dogs are expected to learn to tolerate a muzzle on top of the stress and pain, with strangers. Set your dog up for success, muzzle train them now. Let's hope you never need it, but if your dog is ever in an emergent situation, they shouldn't be experiencing the muzzle for the first time. . . : . #dogloversfeed #dogtraining #vetmed #muzzlemovement #muzzletraining

Mum was inspired to get my muzzle from @the.muzzle.movement out and do some more muzzle training. It was sooo much fun! Desensitizing a dog to the weight of the muzzle sitting on their face is a big step that often gets missed! Most muzzles are decently lightweight, but the feeling of them sitting on a dog’s face can be overwhelming for some dogs. While we are working on building positive associations in the muzzle and adding duration, I like to slowly ease a dog into the feeling of the muzzle fully sitting on their face. While the dog’s face is in the muzzle and they are licking a yummy treat, I hold the bottom of the muzzle then gently remove my hand, still keeping my hand hovering under the muzzle to catch it if it falls. I always leave my hand hovering under the muzzle as it can easily fall off the dog’s face while we are doing this. The noise of it hitting the ground can be startling and cause the dog to form a negative association, which we never want. I may remove my hand from the muzzle for only a second at a time in the beginning, letting the dog feel the pressure for only a moment, then build for more duration. Once the dog is comfortable with the full weight of the muzzle on their face for several seconds, I may add some movement in, encouraging the dog to walk while the muzzle balances on their face.
