VIBMW’s N54 is one of the most popular engines of all time, but here’s what you may not know about it!

In the early 2000’s, two men by the names of Manfred Läpple and Heinz Paschen were tasked with creating BMW’s first mass production turbocharged engine.
The task to create a high output engine while environmental restrictions tightened and drivers needed better fuel economy would have cracked most people, but oh no,
not Manfred and Heinz, because pressure creates diamonds and that’s what they did!
THEY MADE A FREAKING DIAMOND
Debuting at the Geneva motor show in 2006, the N54 went on to win 6 straight International engine of the year awards and three straight Ward best engine awards.
The N54 was unlike anything BMW had made before. They had dabbled into turbocharging with the early models of the 2002, but BMW had never made anything with as much technology as the N54.
They designed the N54 with 2 low inertia twin turbo’s to reduce the turbo lag that they had problems with in the past.
They also created brand new technology for fuel delivery, making the N54 the first BMW engine with Direct Fuel Injection.
But as with all things, nothing is perfect, and the N54 had some pretty serious problems. But this ultimately worked out in BMW’s favor. The cost per horsepower was still in a reasonable price range for weekend warriors,
even after they upgrade the fuel pump and turbo waste gate,
making the N54 an instant classic for people trying to do racer things on a budget.
Today, if you can find a clean example of an N54 the potential horsepower is something that any type of car enthusiasts can enjoy.
