THFractions are one of the biggest stumbling blocks for students sitting Australia’s NAPLAN test, and it’s not because they “can’t do maths.”
It’s because fractions are often taught procedurally instead of conceptually.
By the time NAPLAN rolls around, many students can follow steps like “find a common denominator” or “multiply across the top and bottom”… but when they’re faced with a word problem, visual model, or multi-step reasoning question, they freeze. Why? Because they don’t truly understand what a fraction represents.
On the NAPLAN numeracy test, fraction questions often require students to:
• Compare and order fractions
• Interpret fractions on number lines
• Connect fractions to decimals and percentages
• Solve real-world worded problems
• Explain reasoning
That requires deep understanding, not just memorised rules.

This simple DIY activity helps children understand multiplication by physically grouping popsicle sticks into paper tubes. Instead of just memorising times tables, they experience what “4 groups of 2” really means.
👉 Recommended for ages 5 and up:
• Ages 5–6: Focus on building groups, no need for equations yet.
• Ages 7–8: Introduce equations like 4 x 2 and reinforce it means 4 groups of 2.

HElena Teaching kids to skip count before teaching them multiplication is going to speed up the process when it comes time to memorize the facts! This is the song that we use to help memorize our skip counting facts before memorizing multiplication facts. It is a really cool process to watch them learn the song and then translate that into multiplication, which then translates into memorization. This is some thing that we do as a classical conversations family for our weekly memory work, and I remember in the beginning, thinking this was such a weird way to teach multiplication. Since I was a teacher for so long, I had a hard time adjusting to a new way of teaching multiplication, but I am so glad that I trusted the process because now my seven-year-old who is only just now starting second grade knows all of her multiplication facts from 0 to 15! #homeschool #multiplication #teachmultiplication #timestables #homeschooltips #classicalconversations
