Space Shuttle Columbia 🫡 The space shuttle Columbia was the first orbiter in NASA's Space Shuttle program and it completed 27 missions including the first Spacelab mission. It was tragically lost during re-entry on February 1, 2003, when it disintegrated over Texas, killing all seven crew members on board. The disaster was later determined to have been caused by damage to the shuttle's thermal protection system during launch. The loss of Columbia led to a two-year hiatus in the Space Shuttle program and significant changes to improve the safety of the remaining orbiters. Final Launch Of Endeavor, 2011 STS-134 (ISS assembly flight ULF6) was the penultimate mission of NASA’s Space Shuttle program and the 25th and last spaceflight of Space Shuttle Endeavour. This flight delivered the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer and an ExPRESS Logistics Carrier to the International Space Station. Mark Kelly served as the mission commander. STS-134 was expected to be the final Space Shuttle mission if STS-135 did not receive funding from Congress. However, in February 2011, NASA stated that STS-135 would fly “regardless” of the funding situation. STS-135, flown by Atlantis, took advantage of the processing for STS-335, the Launch on Need mission that would have been necessary if the STS-134 crew became stranded in orbit. In under nine minutes, this spacecraft went from standing still to nearly 28,000 km/h, carrying four humans as the Space Shuttle era ended forever. 🧑‍🚀🚀 On July 8, 2011, Space Shuttle Atlantis lifted off on STS-135, the final mission of NASA’s Space Shuttle program. Inside the cabin, astronauts endured violent vibration, extreme heat, and crushing G-forces as Earth rapidly fell away beneath them. This mission delivered supplies and experiments to the International Space Station, but its significance ran far deeper. STS-135 closed a program that flew 135 missions, built the ISS, deployed the Hubble Space Telescope, and proved reusable spacecraft were possible at scale. When Atlantis touched down for the last time, an entire era of human spaceflight came to a definitive close, reshaping how humanity would reach space going forward. 🛰️ Love Technology? On this day, STS-1 marked the first flight of the Space Shuttle program, with John Young and Bob Crippen landing Space Shuttle Columbia at Edwards Air Force Base after a 2-day mission. Hundreds of thousands gathered in the California desert to witness the return of the 98-ton spacecraft, proving that reusable spaceflight was possible and opening a new chapter in human space exploration.

SPACE SHUTTLE LAUNCH 🌏 Part 324 ✨FUN FACT : The Space Shuttle’s two solid rocket boosters that produced about 5.3 million pounds of thrust more than 70% of the total power needed to leave Earth. For the first two minutes, those boosters did most of the work, burning through about 11,000 pounds of fuel per second each before separating and parachuting back into the ocean to be reused. 🧑‍🚀 Follow @spacegenerationx for more space content #nasa #space #fyp #astronomy #science

The Space Shuttle’s R-bar Pitch Maneuver (RPM), or “backflip,” was a critical 9-minute inspection procedure performed ~600 ft below the International Space Station. As part of post-Columbia (STS-107) safety protocols, the shuttle rotated \(360^{\circ }\) to allow ISS crew to photograph its heat shield for damage before docking. Credit: NASA

The final mission of NASA's Space Shuttle program, STS-135, launched in July 2011, when the shuttle Atlantis docked with the International Space Station (ISS) one last time Before docking with the ISS, the Space Shuttle performed a controlled maneuver known as the R-bar Pitch Maneuver (RPM) for a few key reasons: -The maneuver allowed astronauts on the ISS to photograph the Shuttle's underside, especially the heat shield tiles. This inspection was crucial after the Columbia disaster in 2003, when damaged heat shields led to the shuttle breaking up on re-entry - By rotating the Shuttle, the crew ensured that it was in the correct orientation for a safe and precise docking with the ISS Credit: NASA #spaceshuttle #spaceshuttleprogram #atlantis #iss #spacestation #earthview #earthplanet #planeta
