Native American culture runs deep in the state of Wisconsin with 11 federally recognized tribal nations. The Oneida Nation helped mark Indigenous Peoples Day with a tobacco thanksgiving ceremony, which included an eagle being released back into the wild. See more on the link in our bio.

January marks the 50th anniversary of the Indian Self-Determination Education and Assistance Act, which gave power back to federally recognized Native American tribes to govern themselves. The @choctawnationok is the third largest tribe in the country with more than 225,000 members. It’s about a two-hour drive from the DFW Metroplex in Southwest Oklahoma. I traveled to Oklahoma and sat down with the Chief Gary Batton on what the act means for Indigenous people. @cbsnewstexas #nativeamericans #nativeculture #nativeamerican #indigenous #Choctaw #ChoctawNation

“When we damage or treat the land without regard for its own sustainable well-being, we are in turn hurting and damaging ourselves and disregarding our own well-being safety, and health.”  — Jeffery Gibson @jeffrune   For artist Jeffrey Gibson (Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians/Cherokee Nation), who created the beaded punching bag “To Feel Myself Loved On The Earth,” our connection to the land extends to our own health.    Gibson explains that we should see the elements of our natural environment as “our equal ancestors, living relatives, and as extensions of our own minds and bodies.”   There are less than two weeks left to see Gibson’s work in our Land Carries Our Ancestors exhibition—a show curated by artist Jaune Quick-to-See Smith (Citizen of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Nations), bringing together works by nearly 50 contemporary Native American artists from across the United States. The latest in our #ArchivesRoadToRevolution rotating exhibition looks at how the American Revolution caused a schism within the Cherokee Nation along generational lines. Ahead of @250america in 2026, this exhibition looks at records that trace the journey to the American Revolution and independence. Young Cherokee warriors saw the Revolutionary War as their best opportunity to preserve tribal sovereignty and reclaim lost land, allying with the British. In contrast, older chiefs like Okana-Stoté advocated for peace. Having been commissioned as a captain in service of the French during the Seven Years' War in 1761, he understood the profound consequences that war could have on the Cherokee people. To prevent a similar fate for his nation, Okana-Stoté attempted to engage in diplomacy throughout the Revolution, but his efforts largely went unrecognized. Minnesota’s Republican members of Congress are seeking answers regarding the absence of a statue that once stood on the Capitol grounds. In 1931, the statue took form in Saint Paul to mark Columbus as the first white man to set foot in the Americas in 1492. On June 10, 2020, in the wake of the murder of George Floyd, the statue was brought down by protesters, some of whom identified as members of the American Indian Movement. #ColumbusDay #Statue #history #Minnesota #nativeamericans

Two Indigenous sisters opened up their own thrift shop in Fort Worth this year, located on a road with a traumatic history for local Native Americans. @dancingheart_iglesias makes sure customers feel welcome at her new business, @flipstone_vat Vintage and Thrift, which is tucked off a busy road. Many of the people shopping for the eco-friendly finds may not be aware of an unusual fact. "We knew that it was ironic that we were a Native-owned business on White Settlement Road," Iglesias said. Iglesias is a member of the Lakota tribe. "My mom didn't have those opportunities. I think for her life, she was just surviving. She was in boarding school, and her life was extremely traumatic," Iglesias said. Iglesias is taking advantage of the opportunities her mother didn't have and co-owners the business with her sister, @lilymekeel. The two were born and raised in Tarrant County. The sisters' dream of starting their business on a road with a painful history can help them and Tarrant County's Indigenous people heal from the past while forging a new path for the future. #nativeamerican #indigenous #native #nativepride #nativeamericans #nativewomen
