RINEETCODE SERIES #11 — Best Time to Buy and Sell Stock (LeetCode 121)
If you check every pair… you’ll pass tests, but fail interviews.
Read this slowly.
Problem
Given an array prices, where prices[i] is the price on day i,
return the maximum profit you can achieve.
You must:
* Buy first
* Sell later
Example:
[7,1,5,3,6,4] → 5 (buy at 1, sell at 6)
How to Think (Intuition)
Don’t think “try all buy-sell pairs.”
Think:
“What is the lowest price I have seen so far?”
And
“If I sell today, what profit do I get?”
So at every step:
Profit = current price − minimum price so far
Brute Thinking (What most do)
Check all pairs
Time: O(n²)
Works… but too slow
Key Insight (This solves everything)
You only need:
* Minimum price so far
* Maximum profit so far
That’s it
Optimal Approach (One Pass)
1. Keep track of min price
2. Traverse array once
3. At each step:
* Update min price
* Calculate profit
* Update max profit
Why This Works
You are always buying at the best possible past price
and selling at current best opportunity
Complexity
Time: O(n)
Space: O(1)
Pattern Recognition
This is:
Greedy + Running Minimum pattern
Whenever you see:
* maximize profit
* buy before sell
* best difference
Think:
Track minimum and compute difference
Where It’s Asked
Very common in:
* Amazon
* Google
* Microsoft
* Meta
This is a must-know interview pattern
Important Variations
* Best Time to Buy and Sell Stock II (multiple transactions)
* Stock with cooldown
* Stock with transaction fee
* Maximum subarray (similar thinking of tracking best value)
