They Built Stonehenge in 30 Seconds 🗿 From dense English forest to the world's greatest mystery. We reconstructed the entire construction of Stonehenge — from the first axe clearing the ancient woodland to the summer solstice sunrise blazing through the trilithon gap — using AI. No wheels. No metal tools. No animals. Just ropes, timber, and 25-tonne stones moved 25 kilometres across England. 5,000 years later — nobody fully knows how they did it. This face was never meant to be forgotten. 9,000 years ago, in the ancient city of Jericho, people did something extraordinary. They took a human skull, carefully covered it in clay, and placed shells into the eye sockets. Not as decoration, but as a way to preserve presence. To keep the dead close to the living. These plastered skulls are among the earliest known human portraits in history. Long before paintings or photographs, this was how memory looked. Each detail was intentional. The shape of the face, the smooth surface of the clay, the haunting gaze created by shells. It was not just a skull. It was someone they loved, remembered, or perhaps even revered. Today, through our reconstruction, we try to see beyond the ritual. To imagine the real person behind it. A man who lived at the very beginning of civilization, whose face was carefully recreated by those who knew him. And thousands of years later, we are still looking into his eyes.

My favorite one yet. There is no way to prove this specifically, but my educated guess is all the former hunting dogs of a nomadic society would quickly become guard dogs in a sedentary one. Of course, some still stayed as hunting dogs. Portuguese Stonehenge! 🪨 Except it’s older, and in my opinion, cooler. The Almendres Cromlech is located just outside the city of Évora in the Alentejo region of Portugal. Its first iteration was built around 6,000 BCE, and over time the shape of the stone circles were shifted, with more stones being added and it taking on a more elliptical shape. Many of the stones have decorations and carvings on them, like circles, sun discs, lines, symbols, and even some anthropomorphic features 👨 The Cromlech also lines up with the Almendres Menhir, a Neolithic megalith that points towards the winter solstice sunrise. 🌅 The use of this stone circle isn’t certain, but it likely had a ceremonial or astronomical purpose, possibly linked to seasonal cycles, agriculture, or spiritual practice. What we do know is that for thousands of years, people were visiting this sacred site and shaping it to meet their evolving needs. The Cucuteni-Trypillian culture, which flourished between 5400 and 2700 BCE in present-day Ukraine and Eastern Europe, is renowned for its massive, planned settlements. These prehistoric "mega-sites" featured concentric rings of thousands of structures, including sophisticated two-story houses. The level of urban planning seen in these villages suggests a highly cooperative social structure long before the rise of traditional city-states. One of the most enigmatic aspects of this culture was their practice of deliberately burning their entire settlements to the ground in regular cycles. After the fire, the inhabitants would immediately rebuild on the same site, often following the exact same layout. Scholars debate whether this was a ritualistic act of renewal, a method of pest control, or a way to mark the end of a generation's lifecycle. The archaeological remains provide a wealth of information regarding Neolithic architecture and ceramic production. The debris from the burned clay houses helped preserve floor plans and household items, offering a frozen snapshot of life six millennia ago. These sites challenge our understanding of early human migration and the stability of large-scale communal living in the Copper Age. #Neolithic #AncientEurope #Archaeology

📢 We’ve uncovered the remains of a 6000-year-old wooden track in #Somerset! Our team were called in to investigate the condition of a prehistoric trackway believed to be around 4,600 years old at @somersetwt’s Honeygar site, when they discovered one roughly 1,000 years older. Trackways were raised wooden walkways used by our prehistoric ancestors to cross the watery marshes that once covered the British Isles. Thanks to the peatlands at Honeygar, this nearly 6000-year-old structure has been preserved for millennia, along with the remains of the flora and fauna that once thrived here. With our peat-rich landscapes under increasing threat from droughts due to the climate crisis, so too is our heritage. We’re excited to be able to support Somerset Wildlife Trust’s conservation efforts at their first fully ‘wilded’ site, where they are working to raise water levels and restore biodiversity. 🌿 🔗 Read more, link in bio Somerset Wildlife Trust | Species Survival Fund | @historicengland 🎥 Video description: The text on screen reads ‘Point of View: You’re looking for a 4,600 year old trackway but you find one even older!’ Archaeologist Max can be seen crouching beside the Neolithic trackway. Chris and Max are later shown troweling with wooden tools. Close-up shots of the trackway show how birchwood has been placed in a cross formation. #Archaeology #Prehistoric #Neolithic

“Older than Newgrange… and tied to Fionn?” What if I told you there’s a tomb in Leitrim once believed to hold Fionn mac Cumhaill… …but it turns out to be older than Newgrange? For generations, people believed a passage tomb at Sheebeg in County Leitrim was the burial place of Fionn and Gráinne — lovers at the heart of Irish legend. The story goes back centuries… deeply rooted in local folklore. But when the site was excavated in 1930, two skeletons were found — a man and a woman, buried together inside the cairn. Naturally, people thought: “This must be Fionn and Gráinne.” Now, nearly a century later, modern science has stepped in. Radiocarbon dating has revealed something extraordinary — these remains are over 5,600 years old… That’s thousands of years before Fionn was ever imagined… and even older than Newgrange itself. So what we’re really looking at is not the grave of mythological heroes…but a window into Ireland’s deep Neolithic past — a time long before the stories were ever told. And yet… the myth endured. Because sometimes, it’s not that the stories are wrong, it’s that they remember something far older than we realise. #archaeology #mythology #Ireland #Neolithic #history

Foxes of Göbeklitepe’s Structure B 🦊 Göbeklitepe is rich in animal imagery. On the central pillars of Structure B, foxes emerge in striking relief. What did they mean to the people who carved them? These figures hint at the role of animals in ritual life during the late Neolithic. Belas Knap is a 5,500-year-old Neolithic chambered long barrow in Gloucestershire. What at first appears to be the main entrance is a false door. One theory suggests this could have been a ‘spirit door’, intended to allow the dead to come and go and partake of offerings brought to the tomb by their descendants. It is thought that the most significant ceremonies were conducted in this space which has been likened by some to the womb. The entrances to the barrow are on either side of it. The remains of over 30 people were buried here, including adults and children. What a special, sacred space 💚 #longbarrow #neolithic #history #prehistory #archeology
