Each duck needs a minimum of 4-6 square feet inside their coop for sleeping and 10-15 square feet of outdoor run space. That means 3 ducks need at least a 4x4 foot coop and a 10x15 foot run. However, ducks are much happier with MORE space, the more room, the healthier and less stressed they’ll be. If you let them free-range, you need secure fencing to protect them from predators. Ducks also need access to water for bathing, at minimum a kiddie pool that holds 50+ gallons. Without adequate space, ducks become aggressive, dirty, and develop health problems. Overcrowding is one of the biggest mistakes new duck owners make. Space planning is crucial! Follow for full coop design tutorials! #duckcare #petducks #backyardducks #homesteading #ducks

Thinking about getting ducks this spring?! 🦆 Here are some things you should know: Compared to chickens, ducks can take a little more care. They require daily access to clean water, tend to soak their bedding quickly, and their living areas can get muddy fast. Unlike chickens, ducks also need water deep enough to clean their eyes and nostrils, which means you’ll be refilling and refreshing water often. And this doesn’t stop in winter even in cold weather ducks still need access to water so they can properly clean themselves and keep their feathers in good condition. However, ducks also have some big advantages: • excellent slug and pest control in the garden • rich, nutrient-dense eggs • strong cold toleranc • lots of personality and social behavior If you’re prepared for the extra water and mess, ducks can be an incredibly rewarding addition to a backyard flock. 🦆 What are your thoughts on raising ducks? • • • #homestead #ducks #chickens #backyardflock

We have been looking into getting ducks for a while. I've been trying to do a lot of research on their likes, dislikes, shelter and food needs, etc. So far they have been pretty easy going! These ducks would much rather be in their pool all day rather than out foraging, which was a little bit shocking to me. I obviously knew that ducks love water, but I just assumed that all ducks would enjoy foraging. These girls seem to care less about ridding my garden area of bugs. 😂 I love that their duck coop and run can get/be wet, whereas chickens shouldn't be wet. Their coop and run needs to stay dry. I LOVE that their poop is excellent, free fertilizer for our garden, and I can use it right away! With chicken poop, it is considered "hot" because it has very high levels of nitrogen, ammonia, and salts that will burn and kill your plants. Duck poop has lower ammonia levels but a higher liquid content, so it is able to break down quickly without causing the plants to burn. Duck eggs are higher in fat, which makes them excellent in baked goods! They are also higher in protein, vitamins B12, and Omega-3 than chicken eggs. If you aren't convinced yet to get your own ducks, here's one more reason for you. They are so entertaining to watch! They are so soft and fluffy! It is so fun for my kids and me to hand feed them! Their bills are soft and you're not worried about being pecked too hard like you can with chickens (don't get me wrong, I love my chickens, too). If you don't already have some, it might be time to get some ducks! #homesteader #homeschooling #ducks #homesteading #gardeninglife

Gotta slow em down somehow! …except for Pato. She’s a little slow already 😂🤪🦆 Is it just our ducks, or does anyone else’s ducks act perpetually STARVING? Like the more you feed them, the hungrier they get. As a free-ranging flock, our duckos get plenty of nutrition foraging around the land throughout the day. We don’t need to feed them breakfast for them to be happy, but they freaking love pellets (and dad’s a sucker). These lil quack heads will mow through 10 pricey cups of duck food in 5 minutes, so we do what we can to slow them down. We’ve found that spreading the feed in moss or grass keeps them occupied for a while and makes the fun last a little longer. …our ducks are almost 5 months old and still no eggs, but it should happen any day now! Ready to start collecting on this symbiotic exchange! 😂🍳 #raisingducks #homesteading #ducksofinstagram

Duck brooder 101! If you've brooded chicks before and think ducklings are the same - don't be fooled! Here are some key differences between brooder between chicks and ducklings: 💧 ducklings are wet! Their poop, their drinking, it's allllll wetter than chicks 🏃🏼‍♂️ ducklings grow way faster 🔥 ducklings don't need heat for as long 🏊‍♂️ ducklings need a deeper water source (but shouldn't be swimming yet when they're super young) What questions do you have about raising ducklings?
