CYAspiring network engineers and cybersecurity professionals, this is where your real portfolio starts.
In this hands-on lab, we build VLAN isolation using Router-on-a-Stick, a routing design used in real enterprise networks.
Instead of overly complex labs, hiring managers want to see realistic network designs in your portfolio that demonstrate practical skills.
In this video we build a small enterprise network using Cisco switching and routing concepts.
The lab includes:
* Creating multiple VLANs
* Network segmentation between departments
* Trunk configuration between switch and router
* Router-on-a-Stick using sub-interfaces
* Testing communication between VLANs
* Demonstrating network isolation
Example company segmentation used in the lab:
VLAN 100 – HR
VLAN 200 – SALES
VLAN 300 – Finance
VLAN 400 - IT
By default, these networks cannot communicate, which is exactly how organizations isolate sensitive systems.
We then configure inter-VLAN routing using Router-on-a-Stick, allowing controlled communication between networks.

Here's the honest truth nobody is telling you.
Without networking, there is no cloud, no internet, no AI data centres it is the backbone of everything in tech
You can get into this field with zero experience. I did it in 2021, and I have helped multiple people do the same
You won't hit 190K starting out, but 80 to 90K is very realistic, and it grows from there
Yes, it can be boring when you are configuring, troubleshooting and monitoring but it pays, and it is in demand
AI is actually creating more demand for network engineers, not less. Someone has to maintain all those data centres!
If you want a field that gets you through the door fast, pays decently from day one and gives you the foundation to move into cyber or cloud later, network engineering is still the move in 2026.
