FINDING THAT CONNECTION It’s been 2 years since I first shared this gem with you! You’re watching two neurons that I saw under the microscope sensing one another and connecting. There are 86 billion neurons in the brain - how do they know how to connect to other neurons or body parts when our bodies are developing? They use these webbed hand-like structures that you can see in this video. The finger like projections actively sense the environment around it. When we are developing in utero, you’ll find these “growth cones,” at the tip of every growing neuron, actively searching their way between cells, trying to find the right spot to connect to. When they make their connection, they become resorbed and disappear. I know - it’s heartbreaking that the video ends right when we get to the exciting part, but see the black wavering line in the bottom right? That’s what they look like after they’ve connected together in a Petri dish. When people see this video they often ask, is this what happens when we learn new things? Unfortunately not. Growth cones aren’t responsible for the connections between neurons that form in learning and memory (synapses). Those connections are much smaller and appear as thousands of tiny bumps along the length of the part of a neuron called a dendrite.‬ ‪ This is a video I took of a neuron in a culture dish that I was just about to toss out. I looked at it under the microscope and saw that something interesting was about to happen, so set up a recording. This video has been sped up - it’s the growth that occurred over the space of 20 minutes. This video belongs to me, Dr Lila Landowski. I am very happy for you to share it for teaching purposes, but please acknowledge me accordingly. I keep seeing my video pop up without attribution, so I’ve made this one with a watermark 🥺 #neuroscience #neurology #neurosurgery #brain #brains #neuron #neurons #research #cellculture #laboratory #science #scienceporn #learning #brainhealth #brainawarenessweek #neuro #neuroplasticity #brainteaser #lablife #education #teaching #teachingtips #biology #biologia #viralreels #trendingreels #reelsexplore #reelsoftheday #instagramreels

Neurons form connections 🧠 By extending an axon to meet another neuron's dendrites or cell body. At the synapse, the first neuron releases neurotransmitters, which are chemical messengers that travel across a small gap and bind to the second neuron, causing it to either fire its own signal or remain quiet. This entire process is a fundamental mechanism of how neurons communicate, and it can be strengthened or altered through activities like learning and repetition, a phenomenon known as neuroplasticity. 🎥 nanolive #neuroplasticity #neurophysiology #neurobiology #neuroscience #biology

The unique structure of neurons permits it to receive and carry messages to other neurons and throughout the body. The neuron contains the soma (cell body), which extends the axon (a nerve fiber conducting electrical impulses away from the soma), and dendrites (tree-like structures that receive signals from other neurons). The myelin sheath is an insulating layer that forms around the axon and allows nerve impulses to transmit more rapidly along the axon. #neuron

A synapse is a junction between two neurons (nerve cells), or between a neuron and another cell (e.g., muscle or gland), where nerve impulses are transmitted from one cell to another. Types of Synapses: Electrical Synapse Direct flow of ions through gap junctions Faster transmission Bidirectional Found in: Heart, retina, some parts of the brain Chemical Synapse Uses neurotransmitters to transmit signals across a synaptic cleft Unidirectional Slower but more versatile Common in the central and peripheral nervous systems Structure of a Chemical Synapse: Presynaptic neuron – Sends the signal Synaptic vesicles – Store neurotransmitters Synaptic cleft – Gap between two neurons Postsynaptic neuron – Receives the signal Neurotransmitter receptors – Receive and respond to the chemical signal Process of Synaptic Transmission (Chemical): Nerve impulse reaches presynaptic terminal. Calcium ions enter the cell. Synaptic vesicles release neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft. Neurotransmitters bind to receptors on the postsynaptic neuron. This triggers an electrical response in the postsynaptic neuron. Common Neurotransmitters: Acetylcholine – Neuromuscular junction Dopamine – Mood and movement Serotonin – Sleep, mood, appetite GABA – Inhibitory neurotransmitter Glutamate – Major excitatory neurotransmitter Credits:-@helixanimation #synapse#synapses#neuron#neurotransmitter#neuroscience#brainhealth#neurobiology#brainfunction#nervecell#nervoussystem#neuralconnections#brainchemistry#axon#dendrite#neuroeducation#sciencefacts#brainpower#neuroplasticity#brainanatomy#neuralpathways#medicalstudent#biologyrevision#brainscience#neurophysiology#studygram
