New wave is a music genre that encompasses pop-oriented styles that emerged in the mid- to late 1970s as a lighter and more melodic "broadening of punk culture". The term was coined by Sire Records founder Seymour Stein as a catch-all for musical styles that emerged after punk rock and ultimately encompassed many contemporary popular music styles, including synth-pop, alternative dance and post-punk.

1982 : MISSING PERSONS - Destination Unknown Missing Persons were formed in Los Angeles by former Frank Zappa associates Terry Bozzio (drummer), Dale Bozzio (vocalist) and Warren Cuccurullo (guitarist). The band seemed tailor-made for MTV with their heavy emphasis on image, and the group enjoyed a sizeable hit right off the bat with their gold-certified debut album Spring Session M and hit videos/singles "Words" and "Destination Unknown". Dale Bozzio designed all her stage costumes with friend Doug Powell on the floor of her living room because the band had no money, they had to turn concert tickets into things they needed like drum supplies, studio time, or lunch. She dressed in provocative performance outfits assembled with parts from local hardware and aquatic stores, literally creating futuristic looks from plumbing supplies and fish tank parts. Dale began modeling during the '70s, including appearing in Hustler Magazine, before being introduced to Frank Zappa, who invited her to sing on his epic concept album Joe's Garage. She first met Zappa when she climbed a 3-story fire escape through a bathroom window at a music venue he was playing in Massachusetts. Terry Bozzio went on to become one of rock's greatest drummers. In 1981, Vince Clarke left Depeche Mode burned out, done with touring, done with fame and sat down to write a sentimental ballad he hoped would keep him in good standing with his label. He wrote Only You. He originally composed the melody on a guitar and later converted the riff into synthesizer notes. He offered the song to Andy Fletcher and Martin Gore of Depeche Mode first. They passed on it. So Clarke put an ad out looking for a vocalist. Alison Moyet was on the other side of that ad, fresh from a band that had just split, reluctant to do pop music at all, thinking to herself "I'll never hear the end of it if I go and sing with this pretty boy." She went anyway. She needed the money. The demo was recorded. The label heard it and were indifferent. Then visiting publishing executives from Scandinavia heard it and loved it. That reaction changed everything. A week later, Clarke and Moyet were told to form a group and release it as a single. Moyet described the pairing as "almost like an arranged marriage." The song entered the UK charts at number 198. Today, people would spiral. Moyet was thrilled she couldn't believe she was in the charts at all. It climbed. And climbed. And peaked at number two. Only You is considered a torch song about the end of a relationship where the singer knows it's over but desperately hopes to be proven wrong. NME noted the song may have initially been about Clarke's uneasy departure from Depeche Mode, but Moyet transformed it into the story of someone looking through a scrapbook of photo-like memories.That shift from Clarke's personal disillusionment to Moyet's aching longing is exactly why it hits every single listener somewhere completely different.
