This is definitely not because the luck of the Irish☘️🇮🇪 — it’s Neolithic ingenuity! Newgrange in Ireland is classed as a Neolithic passage tomb dating to around 3200 BCE, but it is so much more than that! Every year at the Winter Solstice, the sun lines up so that it shines directly inside of the tomb for a few minutes 🌅 We’ve always been watching the sky, and this is just another ancient archaeological site that proves it 🔭 Follow @digitwithraven for weekly adventures to ancient wonders around the globe! . . . #ancienthistory #archaeologist #historygram #irishhistory #neolithic | UNESCO | World Heritage Site | things to do in Ireland | things to see in Ireland | Irish archaeology | ancient Ireland | tomb | Neolithic Europe | ancient astronomy | visit Ireland | ancient civilisation | archaeological site

Hidden in the countryside near Downpatrick in County Down, Ballynoe Stone Circle is one of the largest stone circles in Ireland. Archaeologists believe the monument was built during the Bronze Age around four thousand years ago. More than fifty stones still stand here today, arranged in a wide circle with a small cairn at its centre. Sites like this remind us just how deep Ireland’s past really #irishhistory #ancientireland #irishheritage #archaeology #stonecircle

Cairn Holy Chambered Cairns, located in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, are two Neolithic burial monuments dating to around 4000 BC. They feature stone chambers used for communal burials and rituals. Cairn Holy I is larger, with a curved façade and evidence of ceremonial fires, while Cairn Holy II is smaller and linked to the legend of a mythical king. Both cairns are now roofless due to stone removal over time. Artefacts such as pottery and a jade axe suggest long-distance connections and continued use, highlighting their importance as ritual and burial sites in prehistoric Scotland. #scotland #scotlandsites #scottish #burial #ancient Scotland Scottish Burial Stonecarving Sunset

I'm truly lucky to do the work that I do. This video is a short insight into why I started Tuatha. I've worked in Irish archaeology for around 27 years now, and I still get such a thrill from visiting ancient places like the Kilmogue Dolmen (also known as Leac an Scáil). And sharing these places with people has become something of a mission. I believe that the more people understand, enjoy, and care about our ancient monuments, historic landscapes and the ecology that surrounds them, the more they will be protected and cherished for future generations. I'm pretty camera shy at the best of times, so this is also a little step to try to get over that! . . . #ireland #discoverireland #irishhistory #irisharchaeology #IrelandTravel

Saw a 30 second break in the weather went for it and got drenched.. The Callanish Stones (also spelled Calanais) are one of the most important prehistoric monument complexes in Britain, located on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides. Here’s a clear overview of their history and how many circles are in the area. ⸻ 🪨 History of the Callanish Stones Origins (Neolithic period) • The main site—often called Callanish I—was built around 2900–2600 BC • That makes it older than the pyramids of Giza and roughly contemporary with early phases of Stonehenge. What the monument looks like • A stone circle of 13 stones with a tall central monolith • Long rows of stones radiate outward, forming a kind of cross-shaped layout • A burial chamber (cairn) was later inserted into the circle In total, the main monument includes around 50 standing stones . ⸻ Purpose and use We don’t know the exact purpose, but archaeologists think it was: • A ceremonial / ritual site used for over 1,000–2,000 years • Possibly linked to astronomy, especially lunar cycles (like the 18.6-year lunar standstill) • A social or religious gathering place for Neolithic communities There’s also folklore—locals later believed the stones were petrified giants.
