Most people think nihilism just means “life has no meaning.” But that’s only the starting point. Nihilism says there’s no grand design. We’re born from nothing, and we return to nothing. Nietzsche warned about nihilism not as the end, but as a danger. #philosophy #learn #nihilism #belief #wisdom

Which life philosophy defines you? Absurdism Absurdism is a philosophy that explores the conflict between the human desire for meaning and the indifferent universe. It suggests that even though life has no inherent purpose, one can still live fully and create personal meaning. Existentialism Existentialism is a philosophy that emphasizes individual freedom, choice, and responsibility. It argues that life has no predetermined meaning, and each person must create their own purpose through actions. Nihilism Nihilism is a philosophy that denies the existence of objective meaning, truth, or value. It holds that life is inherently meaningless and that traditional beliefs lack real foundation. Stoicism Stoicism is a philosophy that teaches focusing on what is within one’s control and accepting what is not. It promotes self-discipline, emotional control, and maintaining inner peace in all situations.

Ontological explanation of Nihilism Like many philosophical terms, ‘nihilism’ is a word with many meanings. As the adjective ‘ontological’ indicates I am more interested in the kind of nihilism connected with the notion of existence, & not specifically with the kind pertaining to moral values(except insofar as moral values are considered as things that exist). Ontological nihilism asserts: ∀x ¬E(x) for every x, x does not exist. This is distinct from: Metaphysical nihilism (modal version): Possibly, nothing exists. ◊(∀x ¬E(x)) Mereological nihilism: There are no composite objects, only simples. A sentence such as “nothing exists” can be meaningful without requiring the existence of the entities it quantifies over. Quantification does not automatically entail ontological commitment. One may deny that there are any members in the domain without contradiction. The apparent paradox resembles the structure: If ∀x ¬E(x), then no x exists. But the sentence expressing this seems to refer to something. Thus the thesis: (1) ∀x ¬E(x) is logically consistent. It does not entail: (2) ∃x E(x) and therefore does not collapse into contradiction. The constructive argument rests on two premises: Premise 1: Eliminativism Only fundamental entities exist. Formally: (3) ∀x [E(x) → F(x)] Where: F(x) means “x is fundamental.” This principle eliminates derivative entities. If something exists, it must not depend ontologically on anything else. The idea of fundamentality is tied to ontological independence: (4) F(x) ↔ ¬∃y D(x,y) Where: D(x,y) means “x depends ontologically on y.” Thus, something is fundamental if and only if it does not depend on anything else. Premise 2: Non-Foundationalism There are no fundamental entities because all entities depend on something. Formally: (5) ∀x ∃y D(x,y) For every x, there exists some y such that x depends on y. This excludes foundational chains of dependence that terminate in a fundamental entity. There are three possible models of ontological structure: Foundationalism: Dependence chains terminate in fundamental entities. Infinitism: Dependence chains descend infinitely. Coherentism or circularity: Entities depend in loops.

To be clear: nihilism does not tell anyone how to live, nor does it say that life cannot be valuable. Nihilism is solely a description of the universe as existing without an overall context of meaning, which Tartaglia argues must be transcendent. If meaning is to be embedded in the universe and gives humans meaning, then humans will have meaning NO MATTER how they act. Because meaning does not exist in this overall context, many people think that life is not valuable. Tartaglia argues that life’s value coming from meaning is a religious dogma that should be rejected. Nietzsche very clearly agrees that humans can have value without this context, but still tries to give life meaning. He accepts that life does not have an overall meaning, but then responds to nihilism through the overcoming. Tartaglia argues that Nietzsche is just giving a suggestion on HOW to live in a sense that FEELS meaningful. In other words, Nietzche would not offer that response had Nietzsche not accepted that nihilism was true. However, Nietzsche’s overcoming does not give life an overall context of meaning. So, as Tartaglia argues, Nietzche is accepting nihilism as a description of the universe existing without meaning, but then offers a response on how to live, as did Camus and the humanists. Because they all accept that life does not exist in this overall context, and because this all that nihilism is, then Nietzsche, Camus, and the humanists are all nihilists trying to offer their subjective responses. Before anyone says that the eternal reoccurrence provides meaning, an eternal looping universe without meaning is still a universe without meaning. #philosophy #nietzche #nihilism #camus #dostoevsky

Existentialism and absurdism are two of the most popular philosophies in the world, especially on social media. Existentialism is represented by Sartre and de Beauvoir, and absurdism is often represented by Albert Camus. All were French intellectuals active in the decades after World War Two, and they knew each other. They drank, they danced, and they laughed together. But absurdism and existentialism are not the same. This is the difference. The two start from the same point. Both existentialism and absurdism say that there is no higher power looking after us, and there is no purpose handed down. The meaning of life is not written in stone tablets, or what your dad told you growing up. There is no one objective, correct way to do this life thing. And from here they go their separate ways, because absurdists say we have to make peace with this fact. We have to accept that life is an incoherent mystery, and we are meaning-seeking creatures thrown into a meaningless world. But we also have to pause and appreciate the dark humour in that. In fact, that might be all we have. Existentialists, though, say that meaning doesn’t have to be objective. There doesn’t need to be something out there telling us how to live. We all have to create our own meaning. In fact, the entire meaning of life is to create our own meaning. We have to direct our radical freedom in carving out both who we are, and what we stand for. Both have their appeal, and both are represented by very cool intellectuals. But which one do you like the most?

Stoicism teaches readers to see life through the lens of inner control and calm acceptance. When people read Stoic ideas from thinkers like Marcus Aurelius or Epictetus, they often start thinking more rationally about problems instead of reacting emotionally. They begin to feel that hardships are not enemies but tests of character, and that peace comes from mastering their own thoughts rather than trying to control the world. It creates a mindset of quiet strength, resilience, and emotional discipline. Existentialism, shaped by philosophers such as Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus, makes readers question everything about life, meaning, and identity. When people read it, they often start reflecting deeply on their own existence and freedom, sometimes feeling a sense of loneliness or intensity because it tells them that life has no preset purpose and that they alone must create meaning. Instead of comfort, it gives awareness , a feeling that life is uncertain, but that uncertainty is exactly what makes personal choice powerful and real. . .
