This Clip of Kurt & Courtney Turns Into One of the Most Shared VMA Photos Ever (and I fucking love it) Kurt Cobain & Courtney Love at the MTV Video Music Awards (September 2, 1993) 📸 Always thought this photo was iconic. It shows how both Courtney and Kurt were complete opposites but it still worked for them. Courtney pulling Kurt toward the lens, flashing that peace sign over his head. Kurts face blank and confused. You’re watching them become the photo in real time. It hits different when you know what came next. In Utero tour kicked off days later. By spring, he was gone. The producers asked for “Lithium.” Nirvana gave them 140 seconds of pure violence instead Song: Territorial Pissings | Band: Nirvana | Album: Nevermind (Released Sept 24, 1991) | Location: Tonight with Jonathan Ross, London, UK | Date: December 6, 1991 Nirvana was originally scheduled and rehearsed to perform their melodic hit “Lithium” for the British public. The television crew had spent the entire day setting up lighting cues and camera angles specifically for that song. However, as soon as the cameras went live, the band pulled the ultimate punk-rock bait-and-switch. Without a word of warning, they launched into the abrasive, high-speed chaos of “Territorial Pissings,” leaving the director and camera operators scrambling to capture the unscripted carnage. The performance began with bassist Krist Novoselic screaming a distorted, sarcastic rendition of the 1960s peace anthem “Get Together” by The Youngbloods. It was a calculated middle finger to the mainstream “flower power” idealism of the past, immediately replaced by the “buzzsaw” guitar of Kurt Cobain and the animalistic drumming of Dave Grohl. The song, which Kurt wrote as a scathing critique of macho “jock” culture and possessive masculinity, served as a jarring reminder that despite their chart-topping success, Nirvana remained a raw punk band at their core. By the time the final chord rang out, the stage was a graveyard of shattered equipment. Kurt and Krist famously smashed their instruments into the floor while Dave’s drum kit was left in pieces. As the feedback wailed through the studio, a visibly stunned Jonathan Ross walked onto the wreckage and simply remarked, “Wonderful.” It remains one of the most legendary “live TV sabotage” moments in music history, capturing a band at the height of their powers refusing to play by anyone’s rules but their own. #Nirvana #KurtCobain #Grunge #90sRock #TerritorialPissings

#Nirvana #KurtCobain #DaveGrohl #KristNovoselic #Grunge 90sRock Nevermind InUtero SeattleSound MusicHistory "I'm so happy 'cause today I found my friends, they're in my head..." Nirvana performing their MTV Unplugged that later became one of the band’s most widely circulated releases. The performance introduced lesser-known covers by artists like Lead Belly and the Meat Puppets to a mainstream audience and marked one of the band’s most commercially successful video and album releases after its posthumous issue in 1994. The Unplugged album went on to achieve multi-platinum certification, became one of the highest-selling live albums of the decade, and played a major role in expanding MTV’s acoustic series into a long-running commercial format.

This performance comes from MTV Live and Loud, recorded on December 13, 1993 at Pier 48 in Seattle, just weeks after In Utero had reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200. “Breed” was already one of the most chaotic songs in Nirvana’s catalog. First released on Nevermind in 1991, it was built around one of Kurt Cobain’s most explosive riffs, with Dave Grohl practically sprinting through the drums and Krist Novoselic holding the whole thing together underneath. But the Live and Loud version somehow sounds even more violently pleasing (if thats even a thing) and by late 1993, Nirvana were the biggest rock band in the world, but they looked exhausted by everything around them. Kurt appears angry, detached and completely locked into the performance. The giant angel wings behind the stage, the dark lighting and the raw sound made the whole show feel more unsettling than glamorous. No wonder why so many people see Live and Loud as one of Nirvana’s last truly great televised performances. It captured the band at their loudest, messiest and most honest, only a few months before everything ended. The core lineup included Kurt Cobain (lead vocals, guitar), Krist Novoselic (bass), and Dave Grohl (drums). They were joined by touring guitarist Pat Smear and cellist Lori Goldston. Nirvana’s 17-song set was a mix of raw energy and haunting melodies, famously ending with a destructive rendition of "Endless, Nameless" where the band smashed their gear and stage props. 1. Why do we still talk about the end like it came out of nowhere? The unraveling didn’t happen overnight. It was a slow-motion collapse playing out in full view of the world. By early 1994, after a brutal European run for In Utero, the exhaustion had set in deep. Years of relentless touring, mounting pressure, and the tightening grip of addiction had begun to hollow out the most reluctant icon of his generation. Then came Rome, March 4, 1994.. A mixture of champagne and Rohypnol left him unconscious in a hospital bed. Publicly, it was framed as an “accidental overdose.” But for anyone watching closely, it felt like something far more serious: the first visible fracture in a structure that was already giving way. What followed looked orderly from the outside, but behind the scenes it was chaos. Interventions in Seattle. A brief, fragile stay in a Los Angeles rehab facility that ended almost as quickly as it began. Soon after, he slipped away and returned quietly to the gray isolation of the Pacific Northwest. The tragedy of April 5 isn’t just the loss itself. It’s the haunting realization that, in hindsight, the ending wasn’t sudden. It was a slow and devastating descent, one that unfolded step by step, while the entire world watched it happen, powerless to stop the fall. #27club #nirvana #kurtcobain #inutero

I love how Kurt got so excited to play along 😂 The MTV Unplugged session was famously high-tension, but this little “Sweet Home Alabama” jam right before “All Apologies” is such a rare, lighthearted moment. 🎸 You can see that quick smirk from Kurt when the band actually follows his lead. It’s the ultimate “blink and you’ll miss it” 90s moment—just the kings of Seattle taking a second to troll everyone with some Lynyrd Skynyrd mid-set. It really shows that even when they were stripped down and vulnerable, they never lost that punk rock sense of humor. 🤘 This is definitely one of the best “unscripted” moments in 90s rock history! - #Nirvana #KurtCobain #Grunge #90sRock #90sMusic
