It may seem like a small thing but if you think about what it means to have a speaking child who can use words to share an array of emotions… contrast that with a kid who is feeling all the things but lacks the ability to use spoken language. What joy that he can tell us exactly what he finds yummy- not just eating to eat, but letting us know he finds this croissant particularly yummy. I’m not going to lie, when we were introduced to AAC devices we didn’t get it. Let me simplify this- it’s most often just an iPad with software on it. There are different apps- we’re currently using #Proloquo2Go The first few months were frustrating- how was this going to help us, why was it so complicated, wouldn’t this make him dependent and less prone to speaking?? But I’ll admit I was wrong. Little man navigates through this thing finding words I didn’t even know were on there. When we do songs, he’ll tap through as many of the words as he can match. Just cos he doesn’t speak, doesn’t mean he doesn’t understand. Even better, he sometimes not only touches the word, he mouths along with it- effectively increasing moments when we actual hear him speak. I still hope for a time when we don’t need this, but the alternative wasn’t good for him or us. All the Frustration as we tried to guess what he was trying to share. We try to never leave home without this and while we could load the software to other devices, we’ve been advised that it’s best to have just one dedicated device that only serves as his communication device as opposed to a tablet for watching cartoons/playing games. It may be an imperfect tool but it’s a very useful one. #autismawarenessmonth #autismacceptancemonth #autismisbeautiful #neurodiverse #autismfamily #autismparents #autismawareness #aacdevice #nonverbal #nonspeaking #nonverbalautism #nonspeakingautism #onthespectrum #autistickids

I never could have imagined my child would be non verbal. A huge part of me still hopes he will speak, but I think it’s just because I don’t want to feel like I’ve given up on him, for his sake. I can’t even picture him speaking, or the sound of what his voice would be anymore. I’ve learned in the last nine years to feel the world, and what it tells me is so deep and profound. Things I would have missed entirely if I relied solely on my ears…I hope my boy knows I love him as much as I know he loves me…actions really do speak louder than words. I’m grateful for my lessons from Micah every day! May you all find things to be grateful for today. • •#grateful #nonverbal #nonspeaking #downsyndrome #autism

I know many people with Autism and those who work with this population will tell us that we shouldn’t try to stop stimming. That stimming is a result of a person attempting to regulate his body. I don’t disagree with that BUT when it goes on and doesn’t stop, it becomes a loop and I believe that we do need to help our kids get out of loops. As with everything, there is nuance but we must take each individual and situation into account and sometimes our kids do need our help intervening. What are your thoughts on this?!? . . . . #stimming #nonspeaking #nonverbalautism

advice I wish I heard sooner: the goal isn’t speech, it’s communication ❤️ In those early days after diagnosis, the possibility of never hearing his voice felt too heavy to hold. Coming to terms with the fact that he wasn’t speech delayed - he was non-speaking… was a different kind of grief. But grief and growth can exist at the same time. I still hope to hear his voice one day… while also recognising that I already do. Whether it’s eye contact, hand leading, AAC - he has a voice. Stop waiting for speech, start learning their communication ❤️ #autism #nonspeaking #asdmum #autismawareness #nonverbal

Lack of speech does NOT automatically mean lack of language. Speech = the motor act of producing words Language = the cognitive ability to understand and formulate ideas. A child can have plenty to say…and a body that won’t cooperate. Some kids don’t need more words modeled they need help accessing their body. #apraxia #nonverbal #nonspeaking #nonverbalautism

The first year of the pandemic was a bit of a relief. It meant that Gabe couldn’t get his hair cut which was one less thing to dread as a mom of a kid with autism and sensory issues. His hair was down to his shoulders by the end of it. It looked amazing to me. Back then we got to make every decision for him. As Gabe has become a great speller he has now been able to tell us exactly what he wants. He is almost 17 years old and just a month ago he told us he wants short hair like his dad had. We asked Lilly to help Gabe achieve the hairstyle he wanted. He went from thick long flowing hair to short last time. This time he went even shorter! Now he really looks like his dad! The last two haircuts Gabe did not move. He was motivated to get the look he wanted. I had never seen him do as well at the hair salon. He is a pro! This is because he can communicate with us more clearly. So many things have changed since Gabe started spelling. Communication is everything! @_looksby_lil #autism #haircut #nonspeaking #nonverbal #haircuts

Being autistic is hard. Being autistic and non-speaking is 10x harder. It can be incredibly challenging to navigate a world that often fails to understand or accommodate individuals. As parents, it is crucial to be patient and supportive, advocating for our child's unique needs and ensuring they have access to the resources and tools that can help them thrive. But sometimes, it's easier said than done. Some of us parents may have limited access to many of these resources. But one thing, our love, understanding, and patience can make all the difference in their journey.

💙💙 Via @motherhoodphasing Look at my boy!!! 🎹🎼 After 7 weeks, Ronin has fully learned how to play Old MacDonald on the keyboard🥳🥳 Full video will be on my stories today! This win meant a whole lot more because him and did this together. When we started, I wasn't expecting him to sing along, but he did. His little voice is just the best. I can't believe we're here. From him being nonspeaking to now being an emergent speaker is now singing is just amazing.
