Let’s compare a normal bag of platelets with a lipemic bag of platelets, and yes, they can look very different. Platelets are transfused to prevent or treat bleeding in patients with low platelet counts or platelet dysfunction, especially in oncology patients, trauma, surgery, and bone marrow transplant settings.
Lipemia refers to the presence of excess lipids in the plasma, which gives blood products a cloudy or milky appearance. This usually comes from elevated triglycerides in the donor, often related to recent food intake or underlying metabolic conditions.
From a transfusion standpoint, it’s important to know that mild lipemia does not affect the purity, potency, or overall quality of platelet products. As long as the unit meets all required specifications and passes visual inspection criteria, it remains safe and effective for patient use.
This is a great example of how appearance doesn’t always equal performance, and why understanding blood product standards matters in both the lab and clinical decision making.
