BEPaper wasps and others are all part of a greater ecosystem and do not want to get mixed up with you if they can help it. Since this nest is on my house, I will be removing it once the new brood has hathched and the mated females will likely overwinter elsewhere. I will then spray the area with oils such as mints, or eucalyptus to try to cover their pheromones. These wasps collect other insects to feed to the larva while they eat nectar in the adult stage mostly. They will not attack you unless provoked by threats to the nest such as movement nearby, removal, or loud noises nearby. If this was close to a busy area where they may feel threatened, I would figure out a way to remove it (at nighttime, or with a bee suit 😁 or both). I was happy to see at least one of my many grasshoppers going to feed something else rather than munching on all my plants!!

RIWhen we moved here 10 years ago, one of the things on our home search list was “little to no yard” because we didn’t know how to nor wanted to maintain one… Our small front yard was beautiful as the previous owners left it, but since then, in 10 years, we had to do a refresh and sadly cut the huge spruce tree 🌲 that was swallowing the yard, home and day light while prompting a centipede infestation, while taking an opportunity at choosing native plants of our own liking and a new baby dogwood tree 🌱🌸🐝
After our first summer in Indy, we hired a company to spray for mosquitoes 🦟 as I was eaten alive when attempting to enjoy the front yard or courtyard. Then we (evidently, in hindsight,) experienced we were no longer blessed by visitors such as hummingbirds, lighting bugs, butterflies or bees anymore. We then tried to switch to an organic spray which wasn’t as effective mosquito wise and still it didn’t bring our desired friends back. For the past 4 years we have resigned to no longer spraying and with the new flowers planted 🌸 we are so pleased to see bees 🐝 butterflies 🦋 and lighting bugs return. We are still hoping for a hummingbird sighting 🙏🏼
This just to illustrate that the decision has gone full circle. It’s been a journey… Each decision of course has its pros and cons, and we all have to find what brings our inner self at peace. I’ll live with the mosquito bites to a certain extent AND the random bee sting I got when ironically placing my little “no spray zone” sign in the yard (with a friendly bee on it) LOL! 🐝😂 I was literally holding the sign up and yelling “I’m your friend! I’m your friend!” when it chased/stung me 🤣
Anyways… We couldn’t “bee” any happier with how our new front yard has turned out in an effort to be more at one with nature.
