Meta just invented artificial fingers. It’s called Digit 360. That little blue light is a super advanced digital fingertip. So when it touches an item, it can sense and react just like a human would. For example, if it touches something prickly, it can recoil. Or if it picks up something delicate, it can understand and adjust its pressure. But here’s one of the craziest use cases… Digital fashion. In the future, brands could take a version of Digit 360, run it across their clothing, and then transmit the feeling of that material digitally. Because the sensor can read up to 18 different attributes. Things like texture, material, thread count, density. So you could be at home, wearing mixed reality glasses….see what the piece looks like, and then if you were wearing haptic gloves, you could literally reach out, touch the piece, and feel the fabric. All from your couch. This would create an entirely new virtual shopping category…where brands could build out unique experience in the digital world. Now this is a bit of a futuristic example, but you get the point. Digit 360 could also give incredible functionality to prosthetics. If someone has these on the end of an artificial arm or leg, in theory, it could send more accurate signals through their nervous system about what they’re feeling. Meta’s working to scale manufacturing on this right now. And I bet, this will create an entirely new category of embodied experiences. Lets talk about investment breakdown, note this is different to porosity which we’ll go into detail in another video. Sometimes pilot holes can have an unfavourable shape, in this particular case these pilot holes have a cone shape with a pointed tip which can lead to investment breakdown and I’ll explain why.. Here is a sketch of a pilot hole on a wax model surrounded by investment, including investment inside negative pilot hole. As the molten metal flows through the cavity in the investment, there is a high possibility it will break any weak sharp points sticking out and carry them throughout the cast. Sometimes it can float out back to the main sprue, or most likely it will stay within the piece creating investment breakdown. there are three possibilities now. One it will solidify somewhere within the shank never to be found. Two it could be right under the surface and only discovered during mounting and polishing. Or three it can appear right on the surface where we can observe it and mark the cast as failed due to investment breakdown. To lower the risk of investment breakdown in regards to this particular pilot hole design, its best to keep the pilot holes shallow with a very smooth edge. Lets take a look at this sketch with our new shape of pilot hole. Again the wax model is surrounded by investment including the negative space within the pilot hole. But now as the molten metal flows through the cavity in the investment you can see how this new shape of pilot hole allows the metal to flow with less resistance lowering the possibility of any investment break down resulting in a high quality cast #PlatinumCasting #LostWaxCasting #InvestmentBreakdown #BespokeJewellery #JewelleryManufacturer
