Joep Wennemars begon zijn olympisch debuut op de 1000 meter met hoge verwachtingen. De regerend wereldkampioen gold als serieuze kanshebber op een medaille, gesteund door zijn familie op de tribune in Milaan. De race verliep sterk, tot alles halverwege misging door een aanvaring op de kruising met de Chinese schaatser Lian. Het incident haalde hem uit zijn ritme en kostte cruciale tijd.
Ondanks de botsing vocht Wennemars door en reed hij alsnog een scherpe tijd, zelfs sneller dan Kjeld Nuis op dat moment. Toch bleef de frustratie groot. Het Nederlandse kamp was ervan overtuigd dat er zonder het incident een podiumplek mogelijk was. Dat gevoel werd versterkt doordat uiteindelijk een Chinese schaatser het brons pakte.
Wennemars kreeg later op de avond de kans om opnieuw te starten. Die keuze leverde veel respect op, maar sportief viel het tegen. Met 1.08,46 kwam hij ver van de medailles terecht. De teleurstelling was zichtbaar, al kreeg hij applaus voor zijn veerkracht en mentaliteit.
Team Wennemars overweegt een klacht in te dienen bij de organisatie. Het olympisch avontuur is echter nog niet voorbij. Met de 500 en 1500 meter in het vooruitzicht kan Wennemars deze klap omzetten in motivatie. Zijn debuut leverde geen medaille op, maar liet wel zien wat voor vechter hij is.
