OCD can latch onto the things your child values most, and twist them into something confusing, uncomfortable, and even terrifying. Not because they want those thoughts… but because OCD targets what matters, and then floods it with doubt. “What if that means something?” “What if this says something about me?” “What if I’m not who I thought I was?” And just like that, ordinary moments, sitting next to a sibling, talking to a teacher, loving a pet, watching a show, can turn into spirals of fear, shame, and avoidance. So your child might: • pull away suddenly • avoid people or situations • overreact in ways that don’t make sense • get stuck trying to “figure it out” From the outside, it can look confusing… or even concerning. But this is OCD, not desire, not identity, not intent. What helps? Start by naming it for what it is, OCD. Avoid trying to reassure or “prove” the thoughts wrong. And know that this is very treatable with the right support, especially with ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention) therapy. Most importantly, help your child understand that thoughts are not facts, and they don’t define who they are. Contamination OCD is often much more than handwashing. Many kids, teens, and adults can create rigid “safe” spaces, avoid showering, throw away brand new items, or develop designated “contaminated” fingers, all in an effort to manage overwhelming fear, disgust, or uncertainty. These behaviors can look confusing from the outside, but they are often hidden compulsions that quietly take over daily life. The more parents understand how OCD actually works, the easier it becomes to recognize symptoms early, stop unintentionally growing them, and begin responding in ways that truly help. OCD doesn’t just show up in your child… it quietly pulls you into the loop. And most parents don’t realize it’s happening. In each of these examples, your child isn’t just asking a question or making a request. OCD is using you to literally complete an OCD compulsion. You are the metaphorical sink in these situations. None of this means you’re doing anything wrong. It just means OCD is doing what OCD does best. The more we understand these patterns, the easier it is to respond in a way that doesn’t accidentally grow them. That is just one of many areas we support you with inside the AT Parenting Community 👇 ❤️ The AT Parenting Community provides in-depth support and guidance where you will get my guidance, community support, $700 worth of OCD courses to build your skills, weekly live classes on zoom and monthly zoom support group calls for kids, teens and parents. OCD = ज़िंदा नर्क? OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder) is a mental health condition where a person gets unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and feels a strong urge to do certain actions repeatedly (compulsions) to reduce anxiety. OCD is not just overthinking or habit — it’s a brain-based anxiety disorder where: The brain’s “danger alarm system” is overactive Even normal situations feel risky. #ocd #ocdproblems #ocdawareness [ OCD symptoms, repetitive thoughts, anxiety disorder ]

This is what contamination OCD can look like at home. Not just “germ fears.” Not just “being extra clean.” But a constant feeling that things aren’t safe… and a growing set of rules that everyone has to follow. It can look like: -not being able to bring items from school into the house -hours in the shower trying to feel “clean enough” -going through soap faster than you can replace it -needing reassurance about how, when, and if things were washed -restricting where people can sit or go -fear of others “contaminating” spaces -creating “safe” and “unsafe” zones in the home And for parents, it can feel exhausting… confusing… and sometimes even easier to just follow the rules to keep the peace. But here’s the hard truth: The more we accommodate OCD, the stronger it gets. That doesn’t mean you suddenly stop everything overnight. That will backfire. It means slowly, compassionately, and intentionally learning how to respond differently. What helps: – Seeing a qualified OCD specialist who does ERP (Exposure Response Prevention) -learning to recognize when it’s OCD talking, not your child – gently naming it so your child can start to externalize it – educating them on how OCD grows with accommodation – slowly reducing accommodations so they can build tolerance – supporting them through discomfort instead of removing it And most importantly… you don’t have to figure this out on your own. 🧡 Register for my FREE video series Survival Tools for Parents Raising Kids with anxiety or OCD at www.atparentingsurvivalseries.com or comment SERIES and I’ll DM you the link. #ocd #ocdproblems #ocdawareness #childocd #ocdrecovery
