Guess what’s going on in Western Australia right now? One of the biggest aggregations of whale sharks in the world happens on the Ningaloo coast between March and August each year. What do these swirling ocean currents have to do with Earth’s climate? 🌀🌊 These rings are part of the Agulhas Current, which carries water down the east coast of Africa. Sometimes, the current pinches off giant eddies, called Agulhas Rings, that carry salt and heat to the west, into the Atlantic Ocean. Sometimes, these swirling eddies can persist for years! Agulhas Rings are an important part of the Global Ocean Conveyor Belt, a system of currents that plays a big role in the climates of North America, Europe, and Africa. Without these currents, winters in Europe would be much colder, and droughts in Africa more severe. #Earth #NASA #Ocean #AgulhasCurrent #AgulhasRings #Science #Oceanography #Sea #DataVisualisation

Can you spot the smack of jellyfish this whale shark is swimming through? Do you know what else looks like a jellyfish? A plastic bag… This means many jelly-eating wildlife such as whale sharks are attracted to plastic bags as they float in the ocean. Do your bit and #take3forthesea to keep our oceans clean and marine creatures safe. 🎥@brookepykephotography . . . #divinglife #oneocean #underwaterlife #underwaterworld #ABCmyphoto #ausgeo #australiascoralcoast #coralbay #westernaustralia #exmouth #thisiswa #ningalooreef #coralbay #ningaloo #ABCmyphoto #SeeAustralia #BBCWildlifePOTD #EarthCapture #westisbest #marineanimals #oceanography #divingphoto #scubadivinglife #scubadiving #oneocean #underwaterlife #BBCWildlifePOTD #natgeo #take3forthesea

Octopuses are colorblind, yet they’re some of the most skilled camouflage artists in the animal kingdom. 🐙 Their skin is packed with chromatophores, pigment cells that let them change color and texture in an instant to match their environment. How do they do it without seeing color? That’s a puzzle scientists are still trying to solve. #Octopuses #MarineBiology #Oceanography #SeaLife #Science This project is part of @ifthenshecan, an initiative of Lyda Hill Philanthropies.

What's your marine identity? 💙 New research suggests that people’s deep connection with the ocean – their “marine identity” – can help us reset society’s relationship with the seas. Led by Dr. Pamela Buchan from @exetermarine with a diverse, international group of marine researchers and practitioners, this research defines marine identity as: “An identity rooted in how the ocean as a place supports the sense of self.” This is the first time that an international, cross-cultural definition of marine identity has been agreed upon. This research is the culmination of a project that was endorsed as an #OceanDecade Activity and by the @missionoceaneu, and is a key contribution to Decade Challenge 10, which aims to restore society's relationship with the ocean. To read the paper, search "A transdisciplinary co-conceptualisation of marine identity" online. #OceanScience #OceanLiteracy #Oceanography #SDG14 #ProtectOurOceans @uniofexeter

🌊 Happy World Ocean Day! 🌊 💙 The ocean covers 70% of our planet 💙 Significantly more than 50% of the Earth’s oxygen production comes from the ocean 💙 The ocean absorbs around 25% of anthropogenic CO2 emissions Yet 40% of the ocean area is heavily altered. 🚨 Indeed, with nearly 75% of major marine fish stocks depleted/overexploited and 50% of live coral cover on reefs destroyed, it’s time to protect our ocean and take action for marine conservation. Let’s restore our ocean’s vitality and ensure a more sustainable future. 🌍 . . . . #WorldOceansDay #WorldOceanDay #ocean #oceanconservation #saveouroceans #oceanlife #sealife #marinelife #oceanvibes #sea #nature #plasticfree #saveourseas #marineconservation #wildlifeconservation #oceanlovers #discoverocean #oceanbreeze #oceanwaves #oceanside #saveourocean #oceaninfographic #oceanfacts #marinebiology #underwaterworld #oceaneducation #oceanography #discoverocean

Bet you’ve been wondering what my favorite type of sea ice is, huh? Well, never fear, because I’m gonna tell you (yes I know, you’re eternally grateful)! My favorite type of sea ice is pancake ice! Pancake ice are rounded pieces of ice anywhere from one to three feet in diameter and up to four inches thick. Not to be confused with waffle ice. Pancake ice forms when a thin sheet of new ice over a turbulent sea (called grease ice…I’m sensing a theme) breaks up into smaller pieces. As the pieces play bumper cars their edges become rounded, with a crust building up along the edges. The result is a gorgeous stretch of polka dot ocean, the rolling waves creating mesmerizing motion and the light reflecting off the ice serving as the cherry on top… or, the syrup on top. Whatever you like on your pancakes. Pancake ice is super pretty! But it’s also an indicator of climate change. Pancake ice forms because the new grease ice can’t become thicker, and therefore breaks. Pancake ice also usually forms a shortstack once it’s cold enough, piling on top of each other (called “rafting”- very cute) to form solid sheets and eventually ice floes. That process isn’t happening due to rising temperatures, so the pancakes stay pancakes. But what’s wrong with pancakes? Is undoubtedly your next question. Circles can’t cover the same area as, say, a huge rectangular ice sheet can. Water with pancake ice is more exposed to solar radiation and absorbs more heat. It’s also more exposed to wind, which creates more turbulence in the water, and therefore more pancake ice. A pancake party in the Arctic isn’t always a bad thing, but it’s something climate scientists are keeping an eye on. Indicators like this are why the Arctic, and especially sea ice, provides a good deal of foreshadowing on the climate crisis. The Arctic is warming three times faster than the global average, so even something as seemingly harmless and adorably named as pancake ice is indicative of what the future holds for our warming planet. Watch my short lecture, The Arctic’s Disappearing Sea Ice on amilliontinylines.com (link in my bio) to learn more about why sea ice is important and the threats it’s facing.

Solomon Weston, a marine biology student, is spending the summer break from his studies supporting a record-breaking endurance challenge around the coast of Iceland. Solomon recently completed the second year of a Marine Biology and Oceanography degree, and will return for his final year in September. Before that, he is putting some of the skills learned during his course into practice by spending almost three months supporting endurance athlete @rossedgley’s attempt to become the first person to swim around the Icelandic coastline. “I have long been aware of Ross Edgley and his immense endurance challenges, but I had also grown up sailing so taking part in this expedition was hugely appealing to me. I was also in search of placement work and knew this was an incredibly unique opportunity that would help me stand out.“ 📹 Videos by @solomon_weston_ #universityofplymouth #plymouth #marinebiology #oceanography #plymuni #rossedgley #iceland #icelandiccoast #greaticelandicswim #studentlife #university

What is ocean science, and why do we need it? 🐙 The ocean sustains all life on Earth, and is the planet's largest ecosystem – yet we know very little about it. Ocean science is what will enable us to understand it, and to protect this invaluable resource for us all.
