The Ocelot (Leopardus pardalis) is a sleek, secretive wild cat that moves through the forests and wetlands of Central and South America like a living shadow. With its stunning spotted coat and hypnotic eyes, it’s one of the most visually striking small big cats in the wild. Weighing 18–35 pounds (8–16 kg) and measuring up to 3.5 feet long (1.1 meters), the ocelot is compact but extremely agile. Its patterned fur provides perfect camouflage in dense jungle light, breaking up its outline so effectively that it can vanish just a few meters away. Nocturnal by nature, it hunts at night with silent precision — feeding on rodents, birds, reptiles, and small mammals. It moves with smooth, controlled steps, relying on stealth rather than speed, and can climb, swim, and leap with ease. Solitary and highly territorial, the ocelot is rarely seen in the wild, making every sighting feel like a rare encounter with something almost mythical. We recently moved our 7-year-old female ocelot, Pepita, to our off-exhibit habitat enclosures after careful monitoring of her behavior. Ocelots are very shy and elusive, almost secretive in nature, and camouflage well in their natural habitat where they are found in dense forests from southern Texas and Mexico through Central and South America. While particularly shy, since she was moved to her current habitat, she has been more outgoing and her caretakers have noticed an immediate change, as you can see her exploring and navigating her environment, even rolling in the grass and scratching logs. Though she can no longer be seen day-to-day in the main zoo, please know that she was moved for her best interests, and is doing very well. #sfzoo #ocelot

The start of a rewilding journey! Two ocelots have been released into Iberá Park in Northeastern Argentina, marking what is hopefully the start of a rewilding recovery for this species. Ocelots are the third largest cat in the Americas but were driven to extinction in this area during the twentieth century. Now, this pair has been released as part of an ambitious rewilding plan that has already seen six other species, including giant anteaters and macaws, reintroduced to Iberá Park.
