Read Edwin Solano’s journey below. His last day with OCFA is 5/13/25. Join us in wishing him the best! 1. What inspired you to join the OCFA Fire Cadet Program, and how long were you a cadet? I was inspired to join the OCFA Fire Cadet Program shortly after completing a Fire Science ROP course during my senior year of high school. I was drawn to the culture, teamwork, and physical demands of the fire service—and above all, the opportunity to serve my community. That motivation led me to join Cadet Post 9 in Santa Ana, where I proudly served for three years. 2. During your time with Post 9 in Santa Ana, what were some of your favorite experiences and things you learned? One of my favorite experiences was riding along in the city I grew up in. There was always something special about responding to calls in my own community. During my time at Post 9, I developed a wide range of manipulative skills—from pulling hose and throwing ladders to forcible entry techniques. Just as important, I learned the value of discipline, attention to detail, and what it takes to succeed as a probationary firefighter. 3. Who have been some of your most influential mentors at OCFA? I’ve had the privilege of learning from many great mentors at OCFA, but the crew at Station 75 C-Shift has made a big impact. They consistently pushed me to stay disciplined, be squared away, and hold myself to the highest standard. 4. Can you describe the different assignments you have held at OCFA? I began as a Fire Cadet in 2021, with Post 9, where I worked my way up from a white shirt to one of the post captains. Eventually, I earned the opportunity to intern at the OCFA Training Grounds, where I supported training cadre and worked alongside academy recruits. 5. What’s next for you, and what are your long-term goals in the fire service? Up next, I was recently hired on a wildland fire handcrew, so this upcoming fire season I’ll be out in the field helping fight wildfires and gaining valuable experience. Long term, my goal is to become a firefighter with OCFA and serve the community that raised me. I’m fully committed to giving back to the department that gave me my start.
