An offshoot of the iconic Akhalwaya's, Akhalz is connected to one of the longest-standing institutions of fast food in the country, and in short, they know what they’re doing. This pizza is loaded with steak, cheese, chips, and palony, smothered in sauce, and blasted in a giant pizza oven before being served piping hot to customers for only R45. In addition to this famous pizza, they do samosas, a specialty of Lebanese flatbread, and the regulars you’d expect. here’s the thing—you can be a “crunchy” mom without being in such a rigid and judgmental offshoot of society that stays away from every single mainstream thing. in fact, sometimes i find that the crunchy community is so dedicated to staying out of the mainstream, they develop their own set of “rules” that feels equally uncomfortable and not right in my gut to follow blindly. so here’s my take. all the crunchy moms became this way because we started questioning the system for one reason or another. we developed and honed the ability to question the norm, think for ourselves, and exit the system in whichever ways felt right to us. but if we blindly follow some kind of “unconventional” rule book, we’re just doing the same thing all over again but in a different form!!!! which brings me to my confession. i’m a crunchy mom BUT… • i give my kids medicine when they have fevers (duh) • we’ve been to urgent care whenever we’ve needed to • at birthday parties, i let my kids have chemically laden cake or candy bc i don’t want to give them a complex • i did not breastfeed my daughter due to medical reasons • i had two hospital births, one of them being a c section • i got two epidurals • i don’t judge or shame moms who do things differently than we do • i have mom friends who hold different beliefs than i do, plus of course my likeminded crew • …i could go on?! of course i have the things i’m militant about. i do not trust the system at large. we totally do things our own way and pave our own path. but i don’t fall into that category of crunchy that judges other mothers for doing things differently than we do - wouldn’t that defeat the purpose anyway?!? if this resonates, follow along @thebalancedblonde where we walk about all things unconventional living, motherhood, marriage, spiritual awakening & living a life that feels as good on the inside as it looks on the outside 🥹 let’s be besties

Last month, we hosted a one-night-only dinner with NYC heavyweights Billy Durney and Rich Torrisi. The two are friends first, chefs second, which made for a killer greatest hits collab menu. From Red Hook Tavern’s Hamptons offshoot, Sag Harbor Tavern: P.E.I mussels swimming in ‘nduja-spiced tomato broth, and that dry-aged burger you’ve already seen on the feed dozens of times. Torrisi marshalled a pasta parade—cavatelli with Jamaican beef ragu, tortellini pomodoro, lobster raviolini—plus the to-die-for affogato. (If you didn’t snag one, fix that with a Torrisi res, immediately.) Durney even schlepped in Flintstone-sized spare ribs from his other Red Hook institution, Hometown BBQ. The real MVP? The honey butter cornbread leftovers on the Friday morning haul back to the city. Divine.

When Portuguese explorers reached the Americas in the 15th century, they found small monkeys whose coloring resembled these friars, especially when in their robes with hoods down, and named them capuchins. I’ve been so engrossed with exploring Chinese restaurants in Shanghai over the past 2-3 years that I’ve missed the opportunity to visit some excellent “western” restaurants. Better late than never, I made time this trip to dine at ⭐️⭐️Da Vittorio @davittorioristorante at The Bund Financial Centre, , an offshoot of the ⭐️⭐️⭐️ flagship in Brusaporto, Italy. Helmed by Tuscan native, Leonardo Zambrino @leonardozambrino, the restaurant has a pared down warmth that draws with a palette of green, white and splotches of colours, with picture windows framing dreamy views of early spring in Shanghai. DV Shanghai’s menu is a trumvirate of a 14-course Carte Blanche, a 7-course Traditional menu and an a la carte, all assembled with a mix of local and imported produce. Whilst impeccable from start to finish, the star of the show is undoubtedly the pastas. “Vittorio” style Paccheri pasta brings the theatre of pasta to your tableside - large, tubular pasta from the Southern Italy is prepared tableside with a bain-marie of sweet and creamy tomato sauce (Chong Ming tomatoes, San Marzano tomato from Campania and Piccadilly from Sicily) tossed with butter, 24-month Parmesan, EVOO and fresh basil leaves. A dish so sheer that it commands mastery of execution. Fusilloni “pasta e fagioli”, guanciale and Alaskan king crab, on the other hand, is a beautiful marriage of silky kidney bean sauce with guanciale, served with Alaskan king crab leg - hearty with a chance of umami. Rash Behari Bose (1886–1945) was a fearless Indian revolutionary who waged armed struggle against British rule. In his youth, while working clerical jobs including at the Forest Research Institute in Dehradun, he came into contact with revolutionary groups in Bengal, particularly the Anushilan Samiti and its offshoot Jugantar. He received training and ideological inspiration from these secret societies, which operated under the guise of physical culture clubs while preparing for militant action. Bagha Jatin (Jatindranath Mukherjee), a key leader who transformed the western branch of Anushilan Samiti into the more action-oriented Jugantar group, coordinated closely with Bose and entrusted him with organizing revolutionary activities in Upper India (North India and Punjab). Bose masterminded the 1912 Delhi Conspiracy, orchestrating a bomb attack on Viceroy Lord Hardinge during a procession in Chandni Chowk. A young revolutionary in disguise executed the attack, severely injuring the Viceroy. He maintained a public cover by condemning the act while investigators later linked him to the plot. During World War I, Bose became a central organizer of the Ghadar Mutiny (1915), coordinating with the Ghadar Party abroad and Jugantar networks led by Bagha Jatin. He worked to spark a pan-Indian armed uprising within the British Indian Army by infiltrating cantonments and smuggling arms. The plot was betrayed, but Bose evaded capture and fled to Japan in 1915. In Japanese exile, Bose founded the Indian Independence League and laid the foundation for the first Indian National Army (INA or Azad Hind Fauj) in 1942. He rallied Indian prisoners of war captured in Malaya and Burma, built the force’s structure as its early leader, and selected the Azad Hind flag. In 1943, he handed over command of the INA and League presidency to Subhas Chandra Bose in Singapore. He continued as an advisor until his death from tuberculosis in Tokyo on 21 January 1945. His lifelong links to Anushilan Samiti, Jugantar, and Bagha Jatin exemplified the bridge between Bengal’s militant traditions and the global armed freedom struggle. #rashbeharibose #history #subhashchandrabose #india #azadhindfauj
