THSo big 😮 - Part II
This is a ~20 year old shock from a Yamaha WR450F, we took it apart so you can see how similar to MTB shocks they can be 👀
Please note, this is a shock we currently have for display purposes ONLY, so there was no point in replacing all the seals, piston band, nut, bumper and bladder ❗
Although the basic layout of this shock can be similar to the Ohlins TTX due to the bladder and the way the sealhead is attached, this shock uses a monotube design like the Marzocchi Bomber CR (and so many others), keeping things simple ✌️
The base valve design is quite similar to what you'll find on a Fox X2 (and others), using a needle to control low speed compression, and spring preload behind the shim stack to control high speed compression flow 🤘
This type of high speed adjuster is used for tons of applications, due to their simplicity and wide range of adjustment, however, there is a drawback (depending what you're after) 👀
When the adjuster is backed off, the spring preload is minimal, allowing for a smooth transition between the low and high speed circuits. BUT, when you start dialing in the HSC adjuster, the spring preload can make the "opening" force of the shims (or valve) much higher, this can increase digression (similarly to dished pistons) which can turn into harshness 🙅
However, this effect can be reduced by decreasing the diameter where the spring can apply its force against the shims, this better allows for the shims to "crack open" while its range remains effective 🤙
There are other high speed adjuster types, like the relatively recent VVC from Fox using a variable clamping point against wing shims, changing the leverage against them to change the overall valve stiffness without adding digression. Or the variable clamp found on Öhlins TTX shocks, using at least 3 different clamping diameters for its base valve shim stack, also changing the valve stiffness without digression 🤘
There's also a shock that combines both types, the Vorsprung Telum uses a variable clamping diameter for externally custom tuning the shock (no disassembly needed), and spring preload for quick HSC adjustments 🔥
