L'okapi était à l'honneur aujourd'hui! Endémique des forêts tropicales du Congo, l'okapi est un folivore, cousin des girafes! Comme elles, il possède une langue relativement longue pour pouvoir cueillir les feuilles situées haut dans les arbres. Au zoo nous présentons un couple, M'Boshi et Kimosi qui nous ont été confiés dans le cadre d'un programme d'élevage et dont le 1er petit, Likasi, est né il y a bientôt 2 ans. Unser Okapi-Jungtier entwickelt sich prächtig – und ist inzwischen regelmäßig auf der Außenanlage zu beobachten, wo er gemeinsam mit Mutter Nyota neugierig seine Umgebung erkundet. Geboren wurde Makasi bereits Anfang Juni – doch wie bei Okapis üblich, verbrachte er die ersten Lebenswochen gut versteckt: Als sogenannte Ablieger bleiben Okapi-Kälber zunächst regungslos an einem geschützten Ort. Sie sind nahezu geruchslos und setzen erst nach etwa 50 Tagen erstmals Kot ab – ein natürlicher Schutzmechanismus gegen Fressfeinde im Regenwald der Demokratischen Republik Kongo. Nun ist Makasi alt genug, um seiner Mutter immer öfter nach draußen zu folgen – und mit etwas Glück könnt ihr ihn bei eurem Besuch beobachten. 🥰 📍 Die Wilhelma zählt zu den wenigen Zoos weltweit mit regelmäßigen Zuchterfolgen bei dieser stark bedrohten Art. Seit 1989 wurden hier bereits 15 Okapi-Jungtiere geboren. Vater Imba, ein genetisch besonders wertvoller Bulle aus den USA, ist über den Zoo in Basel 2024 zu uns gekommen und trägt nun zur Stabilität der europäischen Reservepopulation bei. Okapis, like giraffes, primarily eat with their tongues. Eating mostly leaves, they spend a large amount of their day eating to get enough food to sustain their energy needs In between, they’ll cram in a few hours of sleep, in short naps of 5-10 minutes each…Yep you read that right, they hardly sleep at all. That means a big part of their natural behavior is eating and manipulating food with their tongues. We spend a lot of time coming up with ways to support this behavior, and that is what’s going on here. I know it can seem like I’m making it intentionally hard on him, but that’s because I am😄 That’s the whole point, it’s good and healthy for him to eat like this. It supports his natural behavior and draws out the feeding, just like it would in nature. Theese feeding boxes is a simple but great way to enrich our Okapis, it is one of many ways we use to prolong and stimulate their natural eating behaviours, and as you can see it has round holes in it, so he’ll have to use his long tongue. We’ll put leaves, various leafy greens or occasionally as you see here a piece of sweet fruit like melons or pinapple. #okapi #conservation #enrichment #naturalbehaviour #copenhagenzoo

De zeldzame okapi spotten in de natuur? Niet makkelijk! 🕵️ Het is vandaag 'World Wildlife Day', een dag waarop we de dieren in de natuur extra in de aandacht zetten. Elke dag werken we samen met onze wetenschappers en onze conservatiestichting Antwerp Zoo Foundation aan het behoud van diersoorten in de natuur. Dat is zeker ook het geval voor de iconische okapi! 🌍 In Congo leven naar schatting nog zo’n 10.000 okapi’s in de natuur, verspreid over een uitgestrekt gebied van 300.000 km². Voeg daar hun schuwe karakter en het dichte regenwoud aan toe, en je begrijpt: bepalen waar deze bedreigde diersoort precies leeft is een uitdaging. Na maandenlang veldwerk - analyses van meststalen, observaties en GPS-tracking - konden wildcamera's eindelijk 100% bevestigen dat er okapi's leven in het Rubi-Telegebied, een gebied waar nooit eerder onderzoek naar de okapi gebeurde. Deze ontdekking opent nieuwe mogelijkheden voor een betere bescherming van de okapi in de natuur, dus onderzoekt Antwerp Zoo Foundation momenteel hoe we de okapi samen met de lokale bevolking kunnen helpen.
