#RoxyWeek We’re not the only ones who love Roxy! These two remora fish are adorable as they compete for their favorite spot on her. @oneoceandiving Remoras have a fascinating symbiotic relationship with sharks—both benefit and thrive in harmony. This mirrors the way many Indigenous Polynesian cultures once lived alongside sharks. Fishermen would clean their catch and return the scraps to the ocean, where sharks recycled the waste, spreading nutrients and maintaining balanced, healthy fish populations. But today, many modern fishermen see sharks as competitio, that they think they getting rid of the monsters. It’s crucial that we reconnect with nature, as Indigenous cultures did just a few generations ago, and restore that balance. We must learn to love and respect the creatures that keep our blue planet alive. How to safely (and respectfully) keep sharks at a distance—even if you adore them. Sharks experience the world differently than we do. Sometimes, they use their mouths to explore objects—and unlike them, we don’t have thick, armored skin. Ocean’s techniques on redirecting have proven effective and have given people tools to be able to share the ocean with sharks. Guess what’s going on in Western Australia right now? One of the biggest aggregations of whale sharks in the world happens on the Ningaloo coast between March and August each year. We are already seeing a huge number of sharks on the reef 🪸 Filmed on tour with @kingsreef #whalesharks #sharks #divinglife  #oneocean #underwaterlife #underwaterworld #ausgeo #australiascoralcoast #westernaustralia #exmouth #thisiswa #ningalooreef #coralbay #ningaloo #ABCmyphoto #SeeAustralia #BBCWildlifePOTD #EarthCapture #westisbest #marineanimals #oceanography #divingphoto #scubadivinglife #scubadiving  #natgeo #ausgeo #WATheDreamState #SeeAustralia #australiascoralcoast #coralcoasthighway

Words by @oceanramsey Out of sight is out of mind. Sharing a view that I hope will resonate with others too. For days, as I close my eyes, I see this moment so clearly, her eyes watching me and her lower eyelid (nictating membrane) lifting in response to her pain as I attempted to free her from the nets 💔 Thank you to the wonderful people who commented and shared on my previous post, I have ordered the suggested bolt cutters for cutting hooks ❤️ and this experience has re-solidified the importance of packing and carrying multiple knives (fellow snorkeler, Freedivers, and scuba divers please do the same 🩵) Grateful in a way the haunting memory replays have given me the idea for the future to use several surface marker buoys and lines attached to the far end of the net (careful you don’t send the boat away and it cannot find you - pack extra SMB’s) In a perfect world, I hope to never come across another sad situation like this again, but given that so much fishing gear is lost in the ocean every day and how many marine animals I see entangled seemingly every week, I’m glad to have now considered this option for the future. The best solution is for everyone to try to push for better regulations, most industrial fishing fleets have no regulations on the number of sharks that they can kill, or gear they lose. Many have no restrictions on the number of other marine species they can kill either. If the demand for a seafood was to drop the pressure on the supply chain could too. There have been some technological developments to help mitigate by catch in certain methods, but without regulations that require these new developments to be used, many companies just go with whatever is more cost-effective to them. Thank to everyone who shared the previous post, speaking up and raising awareness so her (and many others) suffering does not go unnoticed. ❤️🦈❤️🐬❤️🐋❤️ I promise I have a happy post after this, about how local fishermen opted to use a local diver to help them coexist, instead of killing the sharks ❤️🦈❤️ #ocean #sharks #sharkdiving #oneocean #sharkconservation #savetheocean #sharknet #sharkwhisperer #savingsharks #sharkrescue #sharksafety

One of the most evolved species on our planet. Sharks have Existed for over 400 million years. In an evolutionary perspective Sharks are older than dinosaurs and older than trees.. Sharks had survived five mass extinctions, literally reshaping life on our planet after each extinction. Sadly Sharks like this great hammerhead are faced with extinction in our life time and red listed as critically endangered because of human impacts from commercial long line fishing pressures, shark fining, and even local shark fishing. The most beautiful shark in the sea, Stegostoma tigrinum. Known commonly in many places as either a leopard shark or zebra shark. I’ve been so fortunate to photograph many of these beautiful animals on the Ningaloo. They vary in colouration from golden, to white to brown, some with big spots some without. We definitely don’t encounter them very often but when we do it’s absolutely magical. #divinglife  #oneocean #underwaterlife #underwaterworld #BBCWildlifePOTD #EarthCapture #coralreef #ocean #scuba #marineanimals #oceanography #divingphoto #scubadivinglife #scubadiving  #oneocean #underwaterlife #natgeo #wildlife #naturegeography #earthfocus #earthpix #canonphotography #canon #nauticam #leopardshark #shark #zebrashark #wildlifephotography #marinelife #nature #marinebiology #ningalooreef

DIVE SECRET YOU NEED TO KNOW! A lot of people know that spit is good for defogging your mask. However, the technique of applying it is crucial for this to really work. @oceanramsey has perfected this technique and ever since she taught me my mask is always clear when I do the steps. 1. Use your tongue to get the spit off of the front of your teeth, This saliva has the best effect. Then spit into your mask. 2. Rub it into all corners of the lens of your mask. 3. Lightly rinse the top layer of spit 4. Put your mask on right away and get in the water. if you wait too long it will not work as good. Yes, this is Shark ID Nikki and Ocean showing us the benefits of having a clear mask and a deeper connection to one of the most important predators on our planet. Without sharks our ocean’s ecosystem will collapse. Learning good skills and technique to being more aquatic while enjoying in the ocean is key for coexistence between humans and sharks. The YCCS Clean Beach Day took place this morning at the Tre Monti beach in Baja Sardinia, attended by around 100 students from the youngest year groups of the secondary schools in nearby Arzachena and Abbiadori. Andrea de Lucia and Andrea Camedda, researchers from the CNR in Oristano, gave the students some guidance on the beach clean-up, with a focus on micro-plastics smaller than 5 millimetres. The participants were divided into groups and were each provided with sieves. By the end of the morning, around 20 kilograms of various types of waste had been collected, mainly relating to macro and micro plastics, with the latter weighing less but posing a greater danger to marine fauna. Thank you to everyone who supported and participated in the event 🙌🏻💙 ___________________________________________ The YCCS Clean Beach Day has become an annual event on the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda’s calendar of activities dedicated to raising awareness and involving the local community, particularly younger generations, on environmental issues and specifically the safeguarding of the marine environment. The three athletes from the YCCS Young Azzurra programme - Cesare Barabino, Federico Pilloni and Maddalena Spanu – also got involved in the initiative. The event had the patronage of the Municipality of Arzachena, and was supported by the Consorzio Costa Smeralda, One Ocean Foundation, Sailors for the Sea, the Italian Youth Association for UNESCO, with the participation of the National Research Centre (CNR) of Oristano. Most of the time they turn off, most of the time without a person even realizing they are there. Millions of people around the world enter the ocean, the sharks’ home, most people splash and thrash on the surface swimming or surfing and yet despite how easy it would be for them to take life, sharks rarely ever bite a human. Fewer than 10 people die each year from a shark bite. Statistically people are much more likely to drown or die from a jellyfish 🪼 sting, not to mention the even higher chances of death via car accident or countless other ways people are more likely to be killed while on land. Yet there is a hysterical fear disproportionate to the probable chance of death via shark bite. I’m not saying this to encourage people to be blind to shark behavior, certainly not if they are going in the ocean, but keeping the statistics in perspective begs the question who should be scared of whom and who actually needs more protection…More than 100,000,000+ sharks are killed each year. They are important for marine ecosystems that humans and many other marine species rely on. Potentially controversial question: Are humans important for natural ecosystems? 🎥: My POV as a tiger shark swims up directly to me, raising her nictitating membrane (lower eyelid) and sensing me with her ampullae of Lorenzini and lateral line (electroreceptive and pressure sensory organs) I extend my hand Respectfully Ready to Redirect…but she senses me and turns off and does the same to @juansharks swimming by, sensing us possibly out of curiosity, maybe even sensing if we are healthy or a potential prey (food) item or curious about our behavior in relation to our position and her perception of us as a threat or our place in her perceived social hierarchy. She turns off and heads back towards the boat seemingly satisfied to have sensed us and moves on. Snorkeling and freediving with @oneoceandiving #ocean #sharks #oneocean sharkdiving #oahu
