SEI decided to demo open timbre in head voice, because I want to make sure everyone knows this is an acoustic event that is not dependent on laryngeal register or how thick or thin the vocal folds are when vibrating. Acoustic timbres are determined by vocal tract shape and length.
Also, it’s just good for my students to have a vocal reference when we are in lessons!
I never resonated with the term “mix”. I’ve always very clearly felt a clear difference between my head and chest voice. And I didn’t like that I didn’t know with specificity when something was a chesti-ER mix, or a headi-ER mix. So it took me YEARS to get close, and it was so frustrating and confusing. Not to mention, it was so hard communicate with my students because the data didn’t always line up with the evidence.
In my own singing, I adapted by learning how to thin out and thicken my chest voice, but because I didn’t understand vocal acoustics (open, closed, lofted timbre) it always felt like TRUE control over my dynamics was out of reach. I still didn’t know how to make the sounds I really wanted and knew I could learn.

Now, back to head voice. In an attempt to add more colors to my range, I accidentally learned to sing with open timbre in my head voice! It never had the call-like, speech synonymous sound like my chest voice, but it gave me something to work with so that I had access to a powerful sound in head voice that wasn’t lofted timbre.
