VEOstrog Monastery / Montenegro 📍🇲🇪
Located an hour north of Montenegro’s capital Podgorica is the Orthodox Christian Church of Ostrog. It is built within the walls of the cliff, 900m above the Zeta valley and attracts thousands of visitors annually. Towards the end of the 17th century, the church is believed to have been constructed within two caves to give the impression that it has grown out of the rocks of the cliff ⛰️
2km by road below the upper monastery is the lower monastery, which is the starting location for a pilgrimage walk that thousands of pilgrims complete each year in their bare feet 🦶🏼
🚐 it is possible to park day and night at the lower monastery car park, which has toilets, cold showers and drinking water most of the year round (excluding during winter). You can then walk up the the upper monastery along the winding road or through the forest track, which takes around 20-30 minutes. Alternatively, you can drive straight up to the upper monastery and walk a mere 200m to get to the church ⛪️
