Tropical Cyclone Narelle has traversed the coast from Queensland to the Northern Territory, making most recent landfall in Western Australia. Before its arrival in Shark Bay, strong winds picked up dust which led to the appearance of an eerie, red sky. Tropical cyclones have always been part of life for many people in northern Australia, but climate pollution is making them more intense and destructive. It is critical that we understand that such disasters are no longer simply “natural”. Without far deeper and faster cuts to climate pollution, tropical cyclones will become much more powerful and destructive. We must act now to reduce our climate pollution from burning coal, oil and gas, to address the risk of more frequent and damaging disasters.

Here's why: Cyclones thrive in warm ocean temperatures - and our oceans are recording hotter temperatures than ever before because of climate change. According to our friends @theclimatecouncil the Coral Sea, where Cyclone Narelle formed, just recorded its: hottest Dec on record (Dec 2025) hottest Feb on record (Feb 2026) hottest summer on record (2025-26) hottest calendar year on record (2025) Our oceans are doing a lot of the heavy lifting when it comes to absorbing heat from global warming - and the warming of global temperatures is being driven primarily by the burning of fossil fuels - coal, oil and gas. For our oceans sake, for people and for nature - we must break our addiction to fossil fuels. We love this country, and want to see it protected, not ripped apart by greedy corporations putting profits first.
